Today's shoot for this Neon Genesis Evangelion Custom design cosplay duo—featuring Asuka and Rei Ayanami—was completed beside an abandoned metallic vehicle frame. We took plenty of bold, rule-breaking approaches in costume design: Asuka's look retained her signature red hair and cat-ear cap, but integrated a black lace-up jacket, a red-and-black plaid pleated skirt, and black Stockings, topped with a red-and-white necktie to bring out a hybrid flair of punk and techwear. For Rei Ayanami, a light blue wig was paired with a distressed, vintage-edged beret, with black bobby pins tucked into the locks to add a grounded, everyday touch; she wore a light grey sleeveless top, with plush arm warmers and a blue satin ribbon acting as the crown jewels of her ensemble.
We specifically scheduled our shoot for dusk, where the warm amber clouds in the sky contrasted sharply against the cool-toned rusted ruins. This natural illumination fell organically across our figures, achieving a rich, cinematic chiaroscuro without heavy fill lighting. The central interactive motif in the frame was that blue ribbon—extending from Rei's neck right into Asuka's grasp—giving tangible visual form to the unspoken bond between the two characters through a subtle pull and tug. To heighten visual tension, we explored numerous camera angles and framings. One shot horizontally tilted the perspective, letting the red-haired character's leg lines and black Stockings dominate the frame; the contrast between rusted metal pipes and skin texture merged sultry sensuality with apocalyptic grit seamlessly. Another shot retained a standard vantage point, focusing on portraying their nuanced emotions: the blue-haired girl with downcast eyes, the red-haired girl gazing downward, allowing raw emotion to flow naturally.
Photographing a duo Custom design cosplay project like this tests both cosplayers' shared understanding of character bonds to the limit. It cannot rely purely on facial expressions—body orientations, hand gestures, and even the tension applied to held props must be dialed in with unspoken synergy. I constantly pondered how to enrich the visual layering through clashing fabric textures: the sheer transparency of the Stockings, the sleek sheen of the satin ribbon, and the structured firmness of the leather cap. The red-and-blue palette is naturally striking; to prevent the frame from becoming chromatic chaos, I deliberately muted the background blues during post-production while warming and brightening the cloud highlights, allowing visual focus to settle effortlessly upon the subjects. Though physically drained by the end of the session, seeing the sky's color gradations meld flawlessly with our silhouettes made every ounce of effort completely worthwhile. Conceptualizing and executing this custom project took immense devotion, and I hope it fully conveys the apocalyptic yet magnetic vision in our minds. As for wig trimming and makeup: because our natural hair colors and features differ, I trimmed Rei's bangs to frame her facial contours cleanly while reducing makeup saturation, using only cool tones to sculpt dimension. Asuka's reddish-orange wig was softly curled with an iron to add buoyant volume. The wind on set was fairly strong, occasionally ruffling our hair, but it unexpectedly amplified the raw, battle-worn beauty of the wasteland environment. Beyond the rusted chassis, the blue ribbon in hand was hand-cut and dyed from satin fabric by us, with its dimensions carefully measured so it would flutter gracefully in the breeze. This project stands as a brand-new reimagining of these two legendary characters.
