Shanghai's weather lately has been ridiculously sweltering, but shooting this patent leather sailor suit along the Outer Ring Road was something I pushed through anyway. Wearing patent leather in this season is completely airtight—the slightest movement leaves you drenched in sweat. Still, for that crisp nighttime texture and glossy specular highlights, enduring the heat was the only choice.
For this look, I wore a cat-ear headband with round-frame glasses, a black choker around the neck, alongside shoulder-length brown hair and blue contact lenses, leaning into a retro Japanese aesthetic. The top is a short-sleeve black-and-white sailor blouse featuring a subtle bare midriff cutout at the waist, tied with a long white neckerchief at the chest. The pleated skirt on the bottom is crafted from matching patent leather JK uniform fabric, and the massive black-and-white plush tail behind serves as the crowning touch of the coordinate. On my legs were sheer black Stockings paired with glossy black stiletto strappy sandals; the red soles subtly echoed the green logo on the energy drink can in my hand. @喵喵不吃魚 delivered an immaculate makeup look today with heavy blush, creating a distinct vibe behind the glasses that felt both sweet and rebellious.
We shot with 35mm and 85mm primes. The 35mm focal length was ideal along narrow walkways and metal railings, capturing the environmental grit of steel trusses and glass curtain walls along the Outer Ring Road to envelope the frame in a cool, modern urban night mood. Meanwhile, the 85mm focal length handled close-ups and medium shots, compressing the background to turn distant city lights into dreamy bokeh. A Night portrait demands exacting illumination; we set up off-camera flashes on site, where cool white light clashed against the warm amber background glows, yielding razor-sharp reflections across the metallic rails and patent leather sheen.
To lock down the best frames, I unlocked all kinds of poses—crouching along the yellow tactile paving, sitting on marble steps, and leaning back against stainless steel railings. Standing in those stiletto sandals grew exhausting, so I eventually slipped one shoe off, resting my bare foot against the steps and the back of the heel. That spontaneous gesture turned out surprisingly striking, letting the leg lines clad in sheer Stockings flow effortlessly under the light. Using the energy drink can as a prop not only replenished stamina, but also injected raw, casual realism into the Night portrait.
The entire shoot was a serious test of endurance, particularly wearing such an airtight patent leather suit through a humid, sultry night while holding steady expressions and posture. Yet reviewing the final deliverables—with the metallic railings, glistening pavers, distant neon signs, and this monochromatic uniform—the visual impact was undeniable. Fusing Japanese style photography with modern industrial steel architecture was a concept I had long wanted to realize. As soon as we wrapped, it was straight home to take off the makeup and retreat to the air conditioning!
