This outdoor shoot featuring Asuka and Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion perfectly captured that unique apocalyptic atmosphere against a backdrop of a rolling sea of clouds. A lot of effort went into refining the details of both costumes—after all, choosing the right fabrics and materials is crucial to recreating 2D anime textures in real life. For Rei Ayanami's outfit, the standout feature was the open-back design paired with blue halter straps; to capture beautiful backlines, the photographer specifically sought out various side-backlit angles. Iconic elements like the distressed blue fabric of the jacket, the cross on the hat, and the black hairclips were all essential. The white fluffy trim on the arms fluttering in the wind added a subtle, charming contrast to her cool, distant persona. For makeup, red contact lenses paired with a slightly flushed, sultry eye look precisely captured that aloof, detached aura. Because of the unique collar design, applying wardrobe tape took quite a while to keep the shots clean even during dynamic movements. Asuka, on the other hand, brought a completely different, bold style. Her bright orange-red twintail wig was trimmed with rich layers and set with plenty of hairspray to withstand the outdoor wind. The cropped black top combined with red-and-black plaid elements and an exposed midriff put core strength to the test, requiring constant abdominal engagement throughout the shoot. The blue contacts paired with the fiery red hair created a striking visual impact, while detailed styling on the tie and cuffs kept the overall look dynamic and layered. To capture Asuka's signature confidence and vitality, the posing incorporated plenty of proud posture and over-the-shoulder glances. Composing the duo shots was actually quite challenging; due to their height difference and stark contrast in personality, standing poses had to be continuously adjusted. Combining low and high angles helped bring out their mutual bond more effectively. The rolling cloud cover served as a natural diffuser, and casting the warm evening sunset over the cool-toned outfits created a stunning color contrast. The wind was relentless, often blowing the wigs into a mess, leaving us to capture shots quickly during brief lulls. Without relying on excessive props, the pure synergy between costume textures and the natural sky emphasized the characters' inherent charm even more. Seeing the final shots where the wind catches their hair and hemlines made all the prep work and shivering in the cold wind totally worth it. In post-processing, the sky was intentionally darkened to enhance that post-apocalyptic, wasteland aesthetic.
