Attending a cosplay event at Tokyo Tower this time was truly special, as shooting inside such red steel structures is normally impossible without permission, so we took everything seriously from early location scouting to the actual shoot. The overall environmental tone was remarkably uniform; this vibrant red often requires a contrasting color to make the subject pop, which is why I collided it with a blue sailor uniform and light blue hair. Choosing a low-angle perspective was intended to elongate lower-body proportions, while utilizing the industrial iron framework as a backdrop created a sharp, imposing presence.
For the first photo, I chose a relatively stable seated posture, tilting my body sideways to stretch out my legs naturally. Paired with Black over-the-knee socks, it beautifully accentuated the leg lines under light and shadow. Placing the small black bag beside me helped balance the visual center of gravity of the frame, avoiding top-heaviness. At that moment, light filtered down through the grid, creating a textured ambiance that wasn't overly bright. To avoid extraneous scaffolding and tourists around us, the photographer found unique camera angles and used a wide-angle lens. The wide-angle distortion gave the surrounding iron frame lines even greater visual impact.
The second and third photos used wire netting as the foreground; the benefit of this composition is adding depth and layers to the frame, guiding the viewer's gaze inward. Because the light was quite harsh with high contrast, we sought out side shadows or used reflectors in shaded spots inside the tower during the shoot to keep facial skin tones fair and clean, while ensuring the subject wouldn't get drowned out by the red background. In post-processing, heavy stylistic filters were avoided; we mainly made subtle adjustments in color grading—slightly deepening the red and infusing cool tones into the shadows to achieve this warm-and-cool contrast effect.
The venue itself was the biggest challenge: the stairs were very narrow, only allowing passage sideways. Crouching or standing up to change shooting angles required great care to avoid bumping into sharp metal edges. Although the entire shooting process was exhausting, seeing the final photos made it completely worthwhile. This set of photos is not only a cosplay portrayal, but also a frozen memory documenting this iconic landmark. Placing the character in such a setting—the collision of red and blue, paired with an aloof expression against the rigid firmness of steel—resonated deeply with the character's inherent aura.
