[Rei Ayanami Cosplay] The Geometric Chill of Hongyancun Metro Station and Pre-New Year Retouching

I dug out a picture from this set shot before the New Year to re-edit. Seeing the finished cut, all the details of shooting at Exit 5 of Hongyancun Metro Station immediately rushed back into my mind. As a shooting location, this place inherently possesses highly potent attributes. Renowned as the metro station with the world's largest vertical drop, the compression and visual depth brought by this multi-dimensional space make it an absolute treasure in the eyes of architecture enthusiasts.

Coming here at night, the stairs and exposed concrete structures under the streetlights and building illumination present complex lighting where cold and warm colors interweave. The glass barrier at the top filters out a cool-toned blue light, while the middle space where the figure stands is wrapped in warm yellow light; this natural cold-warm contrast is my absolute favorite part of this set of photos. During early shooting, this sailor-collar blue and white school uniform actually demanded precise techniques in a dim environment—controlling the reflection on the pure white collar, capturing the texture of the blue-gray short hair, and avoiding a split shadow look on the face amidst stray lighting were all key focus points of calibration with the photographer back then.

Speaking of this styling, under high-contrast light and shadow environments, the sailor collar and blue skirt can jump out of the warm background, forming an excellent visual focus. Meanwhile, the paired white shoes and dark mid-calf socks add some everyday soft elements into these cold, hard industrial lines. To fit the atmosphere of this scene, the originally lightweight school uniform attire instead generated a marvelous displaced conflict due to the "悬浮感" (levitation feel) brought by the massive drop of Hongyancun Station.

At that specific position of Exit 5, marvelous angles could be found whether shooting from a low angle or a high angle. In this retouched photo, I particularly like this geometric framing composition. The figure is wrapped within the negative space enclosed by two layers of concrete slabs and metal railings above and below, acting like a natural picture frame that forms deep perspective depth within a limited visual space. During post-processing, I kept my edits extremely restrained, maintaining the adversarial relationship between the bright warm light and deep shadows on site. Instead of implementing over-smoothed soft light skin editing, I intensified the edge sharpness of the concrete walls and railings, preserving the original graininess and night scene atmosphere, giving the overall photo a touch of cinematic flair and crisp, cool texture.

When shooting this kind of architectural-style night outdoor shoot, the demands on the camera body's dynamic range and the lens's anti-glare performance are quite high. To straighten the vertical perspective of the railings, I also spent some time doing lens correction and distortion adjustments during editing. Because the main light source of the shooting environment came from the wall lamps, in order not to destroy its original yellowish base tint, I nudged the hue of the shadow parts closer to blue-purple during color grading, which reinforces the cool chill of the night even better. As a hardcore architectural-style night outdoor shoot cosplay project, the final achieved effect still exceeded expectations.

Originally during the shoot, walking on steps with such massive drops while wearing a short skirt and mid-calf socks required paying extra attention to safety. To secure a good perspective, the process of going up and down the stairs to look for camera positions was quite winding, and because this building structure is quite open, the strong wind was still highly noticeable when standing high up, but the sense of focus in the final cut wrapped up these external distractions beautifully.

This kind of shoot, which doesn't rely on complex props but instead counts more on the architectural environment and lighting to shape the atmosphere, actually tests one's interpretation of the scene even more. Although the shooting process that day was tiring, watching the final edited photo makes it feel entirely worthwhile. Every single line and every single shadow has become the best background panel for this look, serving as the most iconic frame memory in this night outdoor shoot cosplay photoshoot based on Neon Genesis Evangelion.
