For this night photoshoot, I chose Asuka's red combat suit from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a classic look I've always wanted to try. This outfit fits extremely snugly, making putting it on and taking it off quite troublesome. The material has a relatively stiff latex-like feel, creating drastically different reflective highlights where warm streetlights meet the cool night sky. To capture the contours of the bodysuit without creating an overly plastic sheen from excessive lighting, we used only a single side-backlight as the key light to illuminate the hair edges and sculpt the facial profile. The red spear prop was actually quite heavy; holding it for a while caused my arms to tremble, which ironically gave the low-angle upward shot a very natural state—as if exerting effort to grasp a heavy, inescapable fate.
The background featured an elevated overpass beneath the pristine blue hour sky. The wind was fierce, so we secured the spear with invisible fishing line to keep it steady. That bridge in the background truly carried an EVA architectural aesthetic. Considering that this combat suit can easily appear unflattering, I deliberately chose sideways postures; the waist curve was just right, harmonizing with the spear tip's upward lines to make my silhouette look slender. Avoiding exaggerated movements or forced expressions, my gaze was mostly directed toward the sky and the weapon, conveying coolness and solitude—which is how I interpret Asuka's core emotional undertone when facing her fate.
In post-processing, we mainly controlled the overall color grading: pushing the sky toward deep cyan-blue and boosting the saturation of the red outfit to create a powerful warm-and-cool contrast. The red reflections on the weapon tended to overexpose in the dark, so manual masking was used to pull down highlights and preserve metallic details. Backlit hair edges were also softened to prevent harsh outlines. Compared to bright daylight, this red-and-blue palette in the nightscape exudes far more tension and better complements the character's persona.
Every time I work on an EVA cosplay project, it poses a real test of physique and posture because the attire itself carries such strong personality. During the shoot, I constantly relaxed my shoulders and neck to achieve more natural curves. Extensive prep went into this shoot—such as preventing wrinkles in the suit and anchoring the red hair clips against the wind. Although exhausting, seeing the finished photos made all the lighting and posing efforts worthwhile. The composition leaned away from standard frontal standing poses in favor of a reclining upward angle to showcase design details of the combat suit. For makeup, highlights and contours were deepened to keep facial features three-dimensional in low light, especially with delicate red eyeshadow echoing the outfit. Posing at an upward angle can easily be unflattering, so I found a flattering jawline angle, supporting my upper body with back strength. The spear also served as a crucial leading line, guiding the viewer's eye from the tip to the face and ultimately resting on the gaze. This was what we achieved through thoughtful design and post-production under equipment constraints. That wraps up the notes from this shoot.
