\"Ever since I can remember, everyone called me 'Rei'\"—this iconic quote is deeply engraved into the character's soul. This time, I opted for a Gothic Rei Ayanami original design, recreating her inherent detachment and purity through a pure white lace dress set against the cold severity of stone steps.
Costumes and props form the core expression of this look. I wore a white dress laden with ruffled lace, a material that shows a wonderfully translucent texture under outdoor lighting. Paired with a neck choker and half-length lace sleeves, the overall outfit achieves a firm sense of refinement. As for props, a sheer lace parasol and a white skull were specially selected for this fan design. The skull's eerie vibe contrasts wonderfully with the dress's sacred purity, perfectly fitting the Gothic theme. For hair, I restored her short hair in a light bluish-purple shade, paired with red contact lenses to retain iconic character recognition.
For the location, we selected aged outdoor stone steps. The cool gray tone of the stone steps contrasts sharply with the pristine white attire, highlighting the main subject to the maximum extent. During the shoot, photographer @仓鼠大王 (Cangshu Dawang) and I made several adjustments to light and shadow capture. We utilized natural ambient light as the key light source, casting mottled shadows of the parasol's lace cutouts onto my face and skirt hem. This soft, cool-white atmospheric quality provided exactly the serene aura needed for this Gothic Rei Ayanami cosplay.
Regarding posing and styling, I didn't deliberately pose with overly sharp or battle-ready postures, choosing instead a quiet, seated stance—gently touching the parasol handle, slightly turning sideways with head tilted up, or letting my gaze calmly meet the lens. I wanted to express a gentle maidenhood that remains quiet and subtly detached, even when wrapped in Gothic darkness. The grid cover art selected a seated, slightly turned angle, balancing skirt spread and parasol composition.
This shoot granted me broader dimensions in understanding the character. Although it's an original fan design, I still hoped to convey narrative depth through the combination of makeup, expression, and environment. The photographer's color control was remarkably precise, avoiding overly heavy vignettes and offering a translucent, dreamy quality instead. For cosplay, great lighting not only restores costume details but also perfectly lifts up the cosplayer's mood crafting. This is a pure Cosplay sharing experience that I, as Xiaodangao myself, hope to present to everyone.
