Shooting this set was quite a challenge, especially when faced with Fujian's continuous overcast weather. The lighting lacked punch and directional contrast, making the entire frame prone to losing dimensional depth, so we put considerable effort into lighting. To highlight this black-and-white contrasting Gothic Lolita style dress covered in ruffles and lace, I specifically prepared reflectors before shooting to add fill light to my face. The costume details are exceptionally intricate—from star ornaments on the shoulders to purple ribbon flower knots at the waist, and down to the tiered black skirt folds and hanging tassels, different structural layers can be appreciated from every angle.
The oversized parasol bonnet hat atop my head was not only a styling highlight, but also acted as an effective softbox under these overcast skies, gently sculpting the facial contours. For the lower half, the black strappy Stocking outfit served as the crowning touch; the crisscrossing ribbon bows gave the classic tights an extra dose of delicacy, which, together with black platform leather shoes, firmly grounded the lower body's visual center on the terrain. The magic broom prop held in hand had substantial weight, adorned with white ribbon bows and streamers that echoed the dress whether swung in motion or held static.
The shooting location was a suburban scrap-metal installation art park, where various discarded sheet metals, fuel tanks, pipes, grating meshes, and colorful oil drums were assembled into bizarre mechanical installations. This hardcore industrial wasteland aesthetic formed a striking contrast with the delicate, ornate dress—which I believe is precisely the charm of this Wasteland-style portrait set. During the shoot, I employed several distinct compositional approaches: for instance, low-angle upward shots like Photo 1, 2, and 7 utilized the converging lines of the metal structures to emphasize the imposing presence of towering machines, where standing atop scrap metal or leaning beside it immediately highlighted the fullness of the skirt and leg lines. The wide shot in Photo 3 and the seated pose in Photo 6 captured the skirt draping and stocking textures impeccably. Photos 4 and 9 were shot inside a retro telephone booth structure; holding the handset felt like exploring a magical world's communication device, infusing narrative atmosphere. The snow mountain backdrop in Photo 10 was the most unexpected surprise of the shoot—the overcast gloom actually made the distant snow-capped peak pop with brightness, and sitting on the wooden platform with the broom conveyed a serene wilderness mood in this Outdoor photography project.
Additionally, the wig for this outfit is a voluminous golden-yellow twin tail style. Thanks to its rich volume, a gentle breeze or a slight turn of the head sent the hair ends brushing across the lace on my shoulders, creating effortless, natural dynamic movement on camera. When navigating between these massive metal structures, I had to be careful not to let the skirt catch on rusted metal edges, so I paid close attention to my footing while striking open, elongated poses—such as straddling the cylindrical metal structures where the skirt naturally flared outwards, which, paired with the black stockings and platform shoes, stretched out a sleek visual silhouette. The biggest disadvantage of overcast weather is flat lighting that can leave scenes looking dull, but its great advantage is acting like a gigantic softbox, diffusing light evenly without casting harsh facial shadows. Thus, I took advantage of this ambient softness, letting the white fabric trims and metal reflections accentuate the frame to make up for the lack of a blue sky. While Fujian's weather can be frustrating with constant cloudy days, making the best of the existing light conditions allowed us to maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses, resulting in a final texture I am thoroughly satisfied with in this Touhou Project cosplay.
