Considerable care went into the set design for this Kinomoto Sakura cosplay photoshoot from Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc, and the final results are truly eye-catching. Built entirely around the Clear Card concept, the scene featured colossal floating cards, anchored visually by the giant card inscribed with 'MIRROR' right in the center. Accented with silver metallic shattered mirror fragments carpeting the floor, along with other cards and flying mirror shards suspended mid-air by fishing line, we strived to recreate a fractured dimensional space imbued with magical impact.
For gear, we shot on a SONY A7M5 paired with the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II and FE 50-150mm F2 GM lenses. Since the set space was relatively confined, the 24-70mm zoom offered superb flexibility for capturing both dynamic full-body action and half-body close-ups, switching framing on the fly. Meanwhile, the 50-150mm telephoto compressed the background, drawing the floating cards and subject onto a unified plane to tighten visual focus. To amplify visual tension, the shoot featured expansive motions—lifting one leg, swinging the sealing staff—and while bracing my core was essential to keep stable, the dynamic flutter of the skirt and hair strands frozen by the shutter enriched the frame's layered depth in this Magical Girl presentation.
Regarding lighting, the set was themed in white and soft pink, illuminated brightly. To accentuate clear translucency, coordinating reflectors with softboxes was crucial, ensuring the white tulle skirt and light-blue folds glowed with an ethereal quality under the light without letting the reflections off the silver mirror shards overexpose.
The most daunting challenge was undoubtedly post-production. The levitating cards, mid-air metallic shards, and weightless mid-air poses all relied on a dense web of fishing line for support and rigging. During shooting, these lines caught the lights easily, creating a dizzying mesh of fine strings across the frame. Manually cloning out these lines and erasing rigging traces in Photoshop was painstaking, demanding meticulous rebuilding and retouching of the background in every single frame. While the process was sheer torture, seeing the final clean, ethereal, time-frozen imagery confirmed that every ounce of effort was worth it.
