Today in Dali Ancient City, I photographed a set of evocative shots featuring the Wamao styling.
The ensemble features a Chinese mandarin collar design combining pale blue and white fabrics, accented by a pink geometric panel at the chest, alongside delicate floral embroidery along the cuffs and skirt hem. Suspended from the waist sash are silver tassel pendants and pink-and-white fluffy pompoms that sway gently with every stride. The most delightful highlight was the ornate cat-ear headdress: plush ears crowned with silver tassels, pink roses, and blue blossoms, worn with two long, thick black braids that strike an impeccable balance between traditional ethnic gravitas and anime playfulness. While the headdress carries noticeable heft, the resulting visual presence was remarkably rich, making every bit of effort worthwhile.
For gear, I packed the Sony A7R6 paired with 28-70mm GM and 50-150mm GM lenses. Dali's daylight was intensely bright; to preserve the crisp clarity of the blue sky and clouds, I calibrated in-camera profiles with care. The 50-150mm GM performed flawlessly in dynamic perspective shots like photo 5 where I reached toward the lens, locking focus firmly onto the eyes while rendering background pavilions in creamy, natural bokeh. The 28-70mm GM suited expansive landscapes, such as sitting atop the rooftop eaves with long braids billowing in the wind; raising the shutter speed froze every strand crisply, while Sony's straight-out-of-camera color science preserved delicate highlight nuances under intense contrast.
Locations focused primarily on historic building rooftops across Dali Ancient City. The staggered green-grey tiles, sweeping eaves in the distance, and bright azure skies formed a pristine natural canvas, bordered by blooming blue and pink hydrangeas that matched the outfit's palette. Moving indoors later to a rustic shop lined with carved wooden fish decorations, warm overhead light took over; I posed with the small clay Wamao prop before wooden shelves, where handcrafted pottery and jars infused the frame with storytelling charm. The painted mythical beast statue in the background of photo 10 also provided grand visual scale, accentuating a petite and spirited silhouette.
The midday sun was harsh, with direct overhead light prone to casting sharp shadows across the face, so I utilized diffused bounce under eaves and stone arches or leveraged backlighting to sculpt radiant rim light along the hair. Wearing this full regalia under scorching sun pushed my stamina—especially supporting the silver accessories purely with my neck. Yet capturing the motion of swinging braids and playful paw-swiping gestures yielded wonderfully candid, organic frames. Minimal post-processing was needed, as the raw color science and rich textures were already stunning.
