[Nikki Cosplay] Finding Tranquility and Poetry Amidst the Greenery of Shining Nikki

When shooting this Shining Nikki location set, my first instinct was to avoid overly polished artificial scenes. Because the character's costume design carries a strong pastoral and vintage feel, I suggested to the photographer during early planning that we find a natural setting with wooden structures and climbing vines, rather than a conventional photo studio or modern cityscape. Looking back now, this was definitely the right call—the unrefined foliage and rusted antique items actually highlighted the clean, delicate nature of the outfit.

Let's start with the makeup and styling details. Light pink long hair is a signature trait of the character; the wig presents a soft luster under sunlight. To match this airy lightness, I deliberately subtle-toned the eyeshadow colors in my makeup, using only earth tones to deepen contours while focusing on under-eye blush and lip color enhancement, striving to present a gentle, non-aggressive demeanor. The outfit is a dress interwoven with soft pink and white; the red bows at the neckline and waist serve as visual highlights, making the skirt hem look lively rather than plain through color contrast. The English lettering "POETRY BLOOM" and small red bows around the bottom hem are actually highly recognizable in the final shots; I paid special attention to these details during the shoot to ensure they were displayed completely across every movement.

Let's discuss the shooting environment and lighting. It was actually a cloudy, overcast day with no direct sunlight, where diffuse soft lighting really tested the photographer's skill. Although non-glaring light doesn't create sharp contrast between light and dark, for shooting soft-colored clothing, it actually brings out the fabric texture and the smoothness of youthful skin much better. The downside, however, is that it can easily make photos look flat, so we put extra effort into composition. For instance, the low-angle upward shot you see (which is the one I chose for the cover) combines the grey vintage house and sky in the background to elongate body lines, making the legs appear more slender and upright. A few other shots holding a clear umbrella cleverly used reflections off the umbrella's edge to brighten the face, avoiding facial shadows commonly caused by overcast skies.

While posing, I kept reminding myself not to look overly staged. Many fellow cosplayers tend to focus entirely on "executing textbook poses," forgetting to interact with the environment. This outfit itself is quite a daily pastoral style, so I conceptualized scenes like picking up flower petals, sheltering from rain with the umbrella, or lingering under an old wooden signpost. Though what is presented is merely a frozen moment, during the shoot I was mentally simulating Nikki's personality within this setting—a girl who quietly enjoys nature with a touch of dreamy wonder. The clear umbrella prop is truly an atmosphere booster; whether held overhead or in hand, it adds a touch of poetic presence to the frame.

As for post-processing color grading, I refrained from heavy filters, striving to maintain the photo's natural color temperature. I merely adjusted the color balance slightly to tilt the green of weeds and leaves in the background toward a slightly yellow, vintage hue. This allowed better harmony with the aged wood of the structures, ensuring the pink-and-white tone of the dress remained the true focal point of the image without having attention stolen by overly lush vegetation.

In fact, every time I complete an outdoor portrait set, I spend a lot of time reviewing and reflecting. Recreating my favorite anime character in reality while seamlessly blending character traits with real-world settings yields a sense of achievement that is hard to measure in words. Conveying that vintage, serene, yet vibrant atmosphere to everyone through photos is the greatest meaning behind this outdoor work. This subtle balance is precisely the sense of reality I hope to discover in Shining Nikki.
