Preparing this Zenless Zone Zero Velina concept took nearly a month from receiving the original artwork to the final shoot. For me, every cosplay is an effort to achieve peak fidelity in the details, so coordinating patterns with the tailor took considerable energy beforehand. The trickiest aspects of the outfit were the waist corset and the trailing train; deep blue fabrics can be very reflective and blow out under studio lighting, so we sampled materials repeatedly before settling on a fabric with a subtle velvety texture that avoided harsh glares. The silver geometric patterns on the train were hand-painted and heat-transferred, requiring extensive trimming to ensure the borders looked natural. The black leather corset around the waist was also resewn twice to hug the body's contours perfectly. The oversized white bow and Elf ears were adjusted repeatedly against the original art's proportions; I ultimately went with a long, pointed design paired with golden pendants to enhance her cool, aloof aura.
For the wig, I picked a light ash-white base cut with defined layers, lightly styling the bangs to keep the silhouette sharp. The makeup emphasized purple contact lenses and a translucent, dewy base. To make it pop on camera, the eye makeup deepened the contours with individual lower lashes to enlarge the eyes, paired with a rosy lip color to soften the cold distance. After testing several shades, I settled on one with a subtle dewy sheen.
The studio set featured pure white Roman pillars and iron chairs, accented with purple, blue, and pink silk blossoms alongside pearl garlands to craft a sacred, dreamlike ambiance. Because the costume had many dark sections, omitting floral accents would have left the frame looking dull. The folding fan was the soul of the shoot—whether veiling half the face or held with both hands, it kept hand poses natural while gracefully concealing awkward angles. The floor was covered with a plush rug, making walking around in White stockings much more comfortable.
For the pose in Photo 1, stepping onto the stone pillar with an extended leg, balancing my center of gravity was tough—it felt like my entire body weight pressed onto the toes of a single foot. The photographer adjusted camera angles multiple times to capture the ideal play of light across the leg and stockings, asking me to point my toes to elongate the lines. Photo 2's cross-legged seated pose focused on highlighting the White stockings and leg contours; soft lighting clearly brought out the side cutouts and the pearl chain draping from the arm. Photo 3's seated pose on the floor with folded hands looked demure, but required constant effort to smooth out the black feathers and silver piping along the skirt hem. Photo 4's straight-leg pose was designed to display the complete geometric pattern of the long train.
Between takes, we tweaked the lighting, using side lights to accentuate the deep blue fabric's sheen while using reflectors to fill facial light and eliminate harsh chin shadows. Though exhausting, seeing the raw images proved that all the pre-production polishing was entirely worth it. I'm especially thrilled with the lighting in this set, which flawlessly captured Velina's cool, mysterious essence.
