[Patchouli Cosplay] Touhou Project: A Reading Moment Created by the Quiet Room and Grimoire - Image 1

This official photoshoot attempts a fan-made design (Nisetsu) of Patchouli Knowledge from Touhou Project, rather than the most strict, official canon. This look actually took a lot of thought in terms of costumes and props; those unique silhouettes all required piece-by-piece shaping and adjustment. To make the edges of that oversized, fluffy purple hat appear voluminous and three-dimensional, hidden structured supports were embedded inside. At the same time, it had to accommodate the flow of the wig strands, so we studied the connection point between the hat and the wig for quite a long time.

The wig is a pale purplish-pink color with a slight gray undertone. To achieve a lazy yet layered visual effect for the character, it was intentionally given a fluffy, slightly curly treatment. The fine braids on both sides coupled with ribbon bowknots are highly critical details for restoring the character's hairstyle, and the left-right symmetrical direction was adjusted several times. The sheer long robe draped over my shoulders and the classical inner layer with a large bowknot at the chest constitute the rich layers of this styling. The sheer material presents a translucent texture under the lights, which is a highly memorable visual feature of this fan design. Moreover, those slim-rimmed glasses, an accessory with exceptional recognizability for Patchouli, were specially picked as lightweight, fine-framed metal glasses that won't press against the bridge of the nose even when worn for long periods, allowing it to seamlessly blend into the scene.

For the shooting, we selected a realistic studio with a dense, vintage atmosphere via this retro style photography session. The dark woody environment features a carved side cabinet that looks like an old-fashioned gramophone, backed by an arched wooden-framed window with dark patterns. This time, I specially communicated a strong dual-color temperature lighting scheme with the photographer, where the cool-toned blue-purple light source on the left formed an intense cool-and-warm contrast with the warm yellow wall lamp on the right. This opposing light and shadow striking the hat and sheer dress allowed the fabric to exhibit a more layered texture. The light projected onto the books and the character's face, fostering a focused atmosphere as if deeply studying magic inside a dim and tranquil magical library.

The grimoire prop held in my hand was also specially prepared. To capture the special effect of the pages glowing with points of light when opened, we hid a small LED light strip inside the layers of the book pages, emitting a warm yellow light. In this way, through the camera's exposure, it presents an effect of magical energy radiating from within the book.

Regarding the core understanding of the character, Patchouli is a witch with asthma who spends most of her time shut inside the library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion reading grimoires. This exact quiet, slightly melancholic, and intellectual aura is perfectly suited to be presented using this kind of dark-toned frame interwoven with cool and warm light. To shoot such a character well, it takes far more than just changing into the clothes and standing in position; from the tailoring pattern of the costume stitching and the gloss control of the wig down to the hidden glowing modules in the props, and further to the arrangement of the venue and whether the dual-color temperature lighting is balanced, everything directly dictates the final quality of the photoshoot.

The tolerance of fan designs allows us to have more space for interpretation within the framework of Touhou Project, without being fully bound by the original canon settings. The preparation process for the props and costumes this time took more than half a month back and forth, and the firmness and flexibility of the hat went through pattern-making four or five times. To ensure accurate exposure in a low-light environment, we used a wide-aperture lens so that the frame wouldn't have that cheap plastic feel brought by excessive studio photography, but rather featured a filmic clarity and weight.

Doing cosplay isn't about changing into another face, but about condensing one's love for this character within the lens. Patchouli has always been a character I love deeply in Touhou Project, and the book in her hands represents endless knowledge. During the shoot, I tried my best to quiet myself down, imagining myself in the underground library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, surrounded by heavy, gorgeous wooden furniture and dark surroundings that constituted a unique reading scenario. For the color expressiveness of the final photos, I must praise the lighting technician—the skin tone looked soft and natural under the interwoven purplish-red and warm yellow light. Post-processing made basically no excessive modifications, striving mostly to restore and reinforce the on-site visual impact. The moment of the production assistant helping me tidy up the skirt hem was also recorded in the behind-the-scenes clips; every excellent photo set sharing is inseparable from the behind-the-scenes team. I hope to let fans who love Touhou Project experience another side of Patchouli's character.
