Posting whichever photo comes to mind, since there's an overwhelming backlog of raw photos waiting to be edited! This Priestess cosplay set from Arknights: Promised Land is definitely one of my earlier sets that I'm quite satisfied with. The shooting environment was a Sci-Fi Laboratory set brimming with heavy metallic textures and arranged with various instruments; when the lights hit, it brought a profound sense of narrative. The initial concept for the shoot was all about candid captures—the poses might look simple, but achieving that aloof yet intensely focused demeanor required numerous readjustments.
Often, scouting and test-shooting in advance is one thing, but getting the definitive keeper shot is another. At that moment, I was sitting by the edge of the bed holding a paper prop that looked like an experimental report. Wanting to try something different, I improvised a few movements on the fly—such as lowering my head to read the documents and then looking up. However, that fleeting instant is extremely hard to replicate because the light needed to fall precisely across the side profile of my face and hand, and pressing the shutter was a matter of just a few seconds. As it turns out, one-of-a-kind, unreproducible moments truly exist—a subject's gaze, subtle micro-expressions, or even the slightest tilt of paper in hand can completely transform the visual tension of a photograph.
Looking closely at the costume details of this set: a crisp white shirt beneath an open Lab coat with a structured collar and an elongated hem that drapes fluidly when seated. The lower half is styled with a black pleated skirt and Black stockings, accented by a tactical belt with metal buckles and side gear, leaning into a cool, hard-edged tech aesthetic. For the shoot, I intentionally selected an angle that captures the full body flatteringly without adding visual bulk; the composition of the second photo highlights these proportions wonderfully. Placing the camera around waist height with a subtle upward tilt effortlessly accentuates leg length, while the texture and sheen of the Black stockings stand out brilliantly under the hard side lighting.
Post-processing also took considerable time. The raw images had stark contrast between light and shadow, with strong cool tones dominating the metallic backdrop. To fit the somewhat oppressive, rigorous, and claustrophobic mood of the Promised Land, I preserved the deep shadows of the background while gently boosting natural light on the face to make the skin look translucent. Still, editing is always the biggest headache—with hundreds of raw shots in the backlog that I genuinely love, retouching a single frame takes forever.
Honestly, the regret of missing a shot that can't be recreated twice is a common part of photography. Back then, I was telling myself to hold on and settle into the pose before snapping rapid bursts to catch the light. Yet light is dynamic, and the optimal shutter moment is fleeting. Compared to heavily posed actions, this semi-candid snapshot state captures the character's intrinsic essence much better. For a character like Priestess, extensive emotional display isn't necessary—a casual, detached gaze, a subtle tilt of the head, and a relaxed posture bring out the desired effect effortlessly. I hope these photos allow you to feel the exact atmosphere I sought to convey in that dim Sci-Fi Laboratory.
