[Aki Minoriko & Aki Shizuha Cosplay] Touhou Project: Autumn's Invitation and the Dance of Falling Leaves

Autumn begins, an invitation from the Aki sisters' season ✨ This post description happens to point out the theme of this outdoor photoshoot. Putting on these outfits of Aki Minoriko and Aki Shizuha from Touhou Project, welcoming the slightly cool early autumn wind, our outdoor shoot officially set this fairy-tale-like tone.

In the actual shoot, the texture of the costumes and color restoration were the core focus of this Cosplay photography preparation. For the Aki Minoriko cosplay played by me, the upper body is the iconic red jacket paired with a white shirt, with intricate ruffles and lace accents at the neckline, cuffs, and skirt hem. Together with the exclusive red hair accessory, it beautifully outlines the character's energy and vitality. The fluffy skirt hem of the lower body chooses a fabric with a certain stiffness, so it presents a highly extended fan shape when jumping and spinning. The white over-knee socks paired with dark round-toe leather shoes with blue rims form a harmonious contrast in color with the red and yellow autumn leaves behind us.

My partner playing the Aki Shizuha cosplay chose a more gentle and introverted color coordination. The beige top combined with a black layered midi skirt, plus that vintage-looking white lace bonnet, looks exceptionally soft visually. The pairing of one red and one yellow, one dynamic and one static, plus our respective white wig styling, presents a strong sense of complementarity in front of the camera, highly matching the setting of the sister characters in the original Touhou Project works.

To catch the most perfect dynamic moments, we repeatedly attempted interaction movements of throwing falling leaves in the small wooden bridge area in front of the woods. The moment the autumn leaves spin and fly in the air, we need to maintain extended body movements while executing natural gaze exchanges. This time, we adopted a shooting plan combining direct sunlight with the sunset glow. It not only preserved the color layers of the blue sky in the background but also allowed the characters' faces to obtain highly soft and clear light, yielding excellent skin texture without excessive post-processing. When shooting duo interactions, the most important thing is tacit cooperation. It needs to be both natural and intimate while maintaining the character's original movement style. Those captured freeze-frames of throwing and catching falling leaves are exactly the sense of autumn invitation we wanted to convey.

Finding the location for this outdoor shoot also took some thought. Behind us is a rolling reddish-brown woods, and the white wooden fence in front forms a highly excellent spatial perspective with the distant natural landscape. The tree trunks on the left and right sides of the frame serve as a foreground frame; this composition method naturally converges the sightline onto us at the center of the frame. From the perspective of post-processing color tone, I lean toward appropriately boosting the saturation of red, orange, and yellow to manifest a rich harvest Autumn atmosphere while preserving the brightness and clarity of the sky, making the overall visual perception of the frame warm but not oppressive.

The preparation of the entire styling is actually far more complex than it looks. The trimming and setting of the wig required a lot of energy to restore the character's fluffy curves. To present that level of fluffiness and arc under the skirt, a matching petticoat was also worn underneath. This pursuit of delving into details is precisely the charm of the hobby of Cosplay. The final effect in the prints is highly satisfying. We completely substituted ourselves into the perspective of the Aki sisters. In such a season of flying fallen leaves, we captured this landscape full of healing vibes through the lens, hoping this visual experience allows everyone to feel the unique beauty and comfort of early autumn.
