This shoot took place in an authentic antique study filled with vintage charm, which was exceptionally suited for bringing out the aesthetic of the Scarlet Devil Mansion library from Touhou Project. To faithfully capture the lore of Patchouli and the Little Devil, we invested substantial preparation into costumes, props, and scenic details. Embodying Patchouli cosplay this time, I wore a light purple wig paired with round-frame spectacles on golden chains, dressed in a Lolita dress interlaced with pink and pale blue, adorned with intricate lace and ribbon bows across the collar, cuffs, and hemline. My partner @XunDeng portrayed the Little devil cosplay, sporting eye-catching vibrant red hair and elf ears alongside a black-and-white maid uniform, black Stockings, and petite bat wings on her back, creating a gothic yet delightfully playful presence.
Lighting choreography on set served as the cornerstone of this shoot. Photographer @ZheGeXiXingSiBuTaiMeng made exquisite use of vintage desk lamps, metal candelabras, and kerosene lanterns as practical light sources to sculpt a shadowy, quiet atmosphere. To recreate the canonical imagery of a magician absorbed in study, we prepared an illuminated prop book. This glowing tome was the masterstroke of the composition; its cool white luminescence cast upon the face imbued the moody setting with an arcane magical mystery while providing a dramatic chiaroscuro contrast.
In posing design, I focused on conveying Patchouli's contemplative, reserved persona—such as sitting on the sofa flipping pages, pausing lost in thought with a quill in hand before the desk, or resting my chin atop an open tome to project a languid, sickly delicate presence. Meanwhile, my partner captured the Little Devil's whimsical, mischievous essence, alternating between draping herself over the sofa back and perching on the desk edge; her crossed legs not only highlighted a spirited side but also imbued the frame with kinetic tension. Although the library setup is inherently quiet, we shared numerous character-driven subtleties during the shoot, such as Patchouli's intense absorption in books contrasted with the Little Devil's loyal companionship, both clearly reflected in our interactive gazes and posture.
Wearing layered lace dresses and Stockings meant adjusting sofa seated poses took considerable time, particularly to keep the skirt hems gracefully flared and maintain sleek hosiery lines. For the composition with my partner seated on the desk edge, we repeatedly calibrated light angles and camera elevation to accentuate the slender lines of her black stockings. Furthermore, stacked books, antique clocks, and intricate carpet textures across the room served as exquisite foreground and background layers, maximizing existing furnishings to enrich depth without leaving empty space.
Overall, the color palette leaned into contrasting moody shadows against warm amber glows, with the dark setting allowing both characters' vibrant hair colors to anchor the visual focal point effortlessly. Garment textures, hosiery sheen, and delicate lace patterns were all gorgeously captured beneath the carefully crafted lighting. Bringing the Scarlet Devil Mansion scenes from our imagination into tangible reality alongside a close friend was immensely rewarding. From costume tailoring to our on-set chemistry with the photographer, every element was infused with pure love for Touhou Project, resulting in an end product we are deeply proud of.
