[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Summer Shrine Corridor and Hydrangeas in Full Bloom: The Fantasy Japanese Style Shrine Maiden of Touhou Project

The shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine has arrived. For this summer outdoor shoot plan, I chose the most representative red-and-white shrine maiden look from Touhou Project for my character interpretation. To fit the "Summer and Hydrangeas" shooting theme given by the photographer, we incorporated intricate Lolita-style decorations into the costume details, making the overall visual layers richer and more full.

Let's start with the head styling. The oversized red bow on top of my head is the absolute visual focus. The sides of the bow are decorated not only with white fluffy pom-poms but also accented with small light blue-and-white flowers. This design retains the classic shrine elements while adding a lot of dreamlike and cute feelings. The long hair on both sides is tied into twintails, and the hair roots are tied with matching red-and-white ribbons with lace edges, echoing the headpiece. On the torso, the top features a large area of white lace patchwork, and the off-the-shoulder design beautifully showcases the lines of the collarbones and shoulders. There is a yellow-and-white corsage decoration on the chest, while the waist is partially hollowed out to reveal a bit of the waistline, carrying a refreshing feel unique to summer. The sleeve covers continue the red-and-white color scheme, made into a wide and loose flared style, with the entire sleeve covered in fine lace patterns. The skirt hem of the lower body is exceptionally fluffy, pieced together from multiple layers of white ruffled lace and a red outer skirt panel, maintaining an excellent skirt silhouette even in a static sitting posture. The white mid-calf socks and black platform buckle shoes on the feet inject a touch of playfulness and solid grounding into this sweet style.

Three main props were prepared for this outdoor shoot. The first is a variant of the Japanese shrine gohei staff—a slender black wand with bells hanging at the top and connected to red-and-white zigzag streamers below, which can generate an excellent dynamic effect when walking or waving. The second is a golden multi-layered pagoda-shaped bell hanging beneath a red ribbon. This prop, when sitting on the steps looking down at the camera, can guide the visual focus and showcase a sense of control coupled with arm movements. The third is a vintage small handheld lantern; during the shifts of light and shadow in the garden at dusk, the warm yellow light hitting my face produced a beautiful warm-and-cool contrast with the surrounding dark green bushes and multicolored hydrangeas.

The shooting location was a courtyard with a traditional Japanese wooden structure. The steps and corridors here have deep colors and delicate wood grains, with striking golden domes on top of the pillars. In this high-contrast environment, the red-and-white shrine maiden attire looks exceptionally vivid and eye-catching. In the outdoor hydrangea bushes, the clustered flowers of purplish-red, blue-purple, and pale pink, together with the lush green leaves, became the perfect foreground and background. The photographer adopted multiple camera positions, including low angles, high overviews, and normal eye-level views, to comprehensively express the dimensionality and layers of the costume.

Shooting outdoors in summer, wearing such a thick lace skirt and long sleeves is actually extremely stifling and hot. Sweat frequently wets my hair and makes it stick to my face, and the sharp edges of the wooden steps were a bit uncomfortable. However, even under these conditions, it was still necessary to maintain a calm and natural demeanor to restore the character's temperament. In cooperation with the photographer, we adjusted the center of gravity, sitting postures, and hand placements, hoping that these photos wouldn't just be flat portraits but could tell a little interlude belonging to the summer Gensokyo. Every time a moment was frozen, seeing the natural drape of the skirt hem and the integration of the red and white color blocks within nature made me realize that the hard work of making the garments and preparing the props this time was not in vain.

Recreating such a fantasy-filled character in the real world and leaving a mark in a summer environment is an inherently highly interesting process. Whether it is every lace border on the clothing or the subtly flickering real flame inside the lantern, everything is striving to create a sense of atmosphere detached from real everyday life. The character of Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project possesses her unique shrine maiden temperament, and this performance is a tangible manifestation of this summer character in my heart.
