This photoset of Touhou Project's Kazami Yuuka and Medicine Melancholy was taken recently in a sunflower field. After collaborating with Yuuka-mama @Lu Lu, we found the lighting quality was absolutely beautiful, so I edited and finished the photos as soon as possible.
The temperature on the day of the shoot was extremely high, but the color palette of the sunflower field was just too gorgeous. The vast, sweeping expanse of the golden flower sea formed a striking color contrast with Yuuka's signature green hair and Medicine's large red bow. This time, we intentionally caught the period when the light was soft to enter the field for the shoot. Although there were quite a few insects in the flower field, the translucent quality of the natural light in the final photos made me feel that all the trouble was completely worth it.
In terms of styling, a lot of thought went into coordinating the Western-style dress choices this time. Yuuka's straw hat and intricate white lace dress perfectly matched the pastoral, idyllic atmosphere of the flower field. As for me, portraying the "doll" Medicine, that large red bow was actually very heavy. With the photographer's help, we secured it several times to ensure it remained upright in high-angle shots and close-ups, while pairing it with a white lace collar and a black skirt. The overall outfit wasn't revealing at all, but the sense of layering was maximized.
The most pleasant surprise of the entire shoot was the dynamic candid captures. For example, the two of us sitting side by side among the flowers holding a parasol, or me reaching out to catch a butterfly landing on my fingertip (that moment was actually precisely captured by the photographer @Tokisaki Yano). The difficulty of this kind of outdoor duo shoot lies in managing the interactive tension between the two characters while ensuring that our respective makeup and outfits don't get messed up while moving around. We had a very clear division of labor on-site: Yuuka-mama was in charge of setting up the main frame, while I was responsible for passing props and adjusting clothing details. Since the sunflowers grew very densely, we had to step accurately on the ridges to avoid trampling the flowers.
In fact, this shoot didn't rigidly replicate the specific interaction between the "poison doll" and the "youkai of flowers" from the original work, but instead leaned towards expressing a casual, slice-of-life atmosphere of "strolling through a flower field." The material of the costumes was a relatively lightweight summer variant; although the skirts looked very puffy from afar, they were actually quite comfortable to move around in without any heavy, suffocating heat.
The photographer's composition was also very interesting. He not only took wide aerial shots of the flower sea to fully display that overwhelming yellow but also intentionally kept some close-ups and medium shots. In post-processing color grading, we uniformly applied a soft, warm yellow tone without intentionally cranking up the saturation, as the sunflowers' natural colors were already vibrant enough.
Posting this photoset is simply to document that summer afternoon, the process of everyone being busy yet filled with laughter in the flower field. Being able to successfully complete this project as the "doll" is also very memorable. Although I know Kazami Yuuka typically has a very powerful aura, shooting with Yuuka-mama this time actually gave off the relaxed feeling of taking a child out for a stroll.
