[Marisa Kirisame cosplay] Touhou Project's Witch of the Staircase Corridor

Getting straight to the point, the setting of stealing precious things, paired with this black-and-white Witch cosplay outfit, feels highly atmospheric in this retro blue-toned staircase. This shoot mainly wanted to present a relatively raw everyday feel of the wizard, rather than a highly grand style with tons of special effects.

The chosen location is this Italian-style small staircase corridor, with deep blue wooden handrails and steps on the left, and a distressed mottled archway in the background, with two warm yellow retro wall lamps hanging on the wall. The red-brown scallop shape above the archway forms a visual contrast with the cool-toned wall surface. The scattered books on the stairs are props I specially placed to add layers to the composition, and also to echo the character's setting of collecting books everywhere.

For the wig, I used long curly golden hair. This long curly style heavily tests the quality of the wig; if shot outdoors, it can easily turn into dry grass, so we spent a lot of effort styling it into a well-layered and slightly fluffy state. The hat itself is a classic black-and-white ruffled wide-brimmed shape. To add some romantic and retro color, dried flowers were specially used to decorate the top of the brim, with stacked orange, purple, and withered yellow flowers keeping the entire head look from looking plain.

The clothing features a black-and-white ruffled dress with a black sleeveless apron, paired with lantern-sleeved shirts inside and multi-layered white skirt hems underneath. The front of the skirt and the apron are embellished with several golden star patterns. The fabric was selected from slightly heavy materials, so that when sitting or standing, the drape of the skirt hem is very natural instead of looking feather-light. On my feet, I wore thick-soled dark brown leather shoes and white ruffled loose socks, which fit the scene perfectly.

In terms of props, a broom is indispensable; the brown broom head tied with white cloth strips looks both practical and slightly handmade. Additionally, I held an octagonal magic reactor in hand when posing, adding some professional touch to the wizard.

For the wizard photography, the lighting scheduling was quite interesting this time, adopting a side-backlight similar to afternoon sunlight, casting highly clear shadows on the wall and steps behind the character. This high-contrast light and shadow effect gives the entire frame a strong sense of drama. The shoot used blurred green leaves in the foreground as a shield to form a frame composition, focusing the audience's gaze on the character in the center. The blue-toned background combined with the shadows in the dark areas, plus the character's golden hair, made the post-processing direction very clear once the cold-warm color contrast was established.

Actually, when shooting this set of photos, there were quite a few challenges. Because the light in some scenes was cut very harshly, the facial shadows needed repeated angle adjustments to achieve the ideal presentation. Additionally, because the magic hat is quite large and the wig itself has thickness, the hat slid easily during the shoot, requiring me to hold it with my hand from time to time—an action that instead merged very naturally into the frame.

This set of photos basically restored the image of the wizard in my mind. She doesn't have many gorgeous or complex settings, but her free, slightly playful, and persistent charm is still very easy to express. Although shot in an indoor set, because the light and shadow were handled properly, the overall presentation carries a feeling of an outdoor courtyard or a European alley. We will do some subtle darkening adjustments to the shadows later to soften the edges of the shadows, making it look closer to a retro oil painting work in this Ningbo cosplay photoshoot.
