Photographed by "@你们长这么牛逼我怎么活", this photo set is themed "Past Self in the Mirror," aiming to capture Ruan Mei's solitude and contemplative mood while preparing herself in front of a mirror (Mirror selfie framing).
Let's start with the wig details. To recreate the cool and aloof vibe in Ruan Mei's hair layers, I specially blended ice-blue highlights into the black base wig. Using braiding and updo techniques, these subtle blue strands weave delicately through the black braids. Achieving this color contrast between black roots and ice-blue tips required custom dyeing before multi-strand braiding, hiding the innermost strands deeply while leaving just a few accent threads visible on the outside. The tightness of the braids and the curl of the hair ends were meticulously adjusted. Finding the top headpiece took a long time—it had to capture Xianzhou's antique aesthetic without being too heavy and flattening the hairstyle. Positioning had to be centered and balanced securely so as not to throw off the head's balance. Plenty of setting spray was applied to keep the hair flowing smoothly throughout the shoot.
The Cosplay makeup was crafted with extreme care. Lighting before the mirror was critical, especially with her pale blue-green eyes. To convey Ruan Mei's detached, world-weary yet sharp expression, I wore contact lenses with a soft-edged gradient from pale blue to teal green. The eye makeup was paramount; the daily disposable lenses were translucent, and paired with light glitter along the upper and lower eyelids plus an elongated eyeliner stroke, they heightened the piercing intensity when looking back. Elongated eyeliner blended with cool-toned eyeshadow gave her gaze a deep, rational quality. Base makeup was kept clean and translucent, swapping vibrant lipsticks for a nude matte texture. A matte nude-beige blush replaced heavy contouring and highlighters, allowing a gentle flush to bleed through her porcelain base without heavy makeup ruining her natural fair, aloof elegance.
Costume and accessories were another major focus. The white satin collar features delicate small ruffles, with a plump emerald gem dead center serving as the visual focal point of the upper body, anchored below by a tiny pendant and a soft pink bow ribbon—creating an exquisite color balance. The emerald, pink bow, and metal buckles were interconnected via fine chains. Rather than a slick metallic satin, the white fabric carried a fine matte texture that absorbed diffuse ambient light for a softer photo render. The back design offered another striking perspective, where metal fasteners complemented teardrop-shaped red and green gems. The teardrop ruby pendant on the back carried significant weight hanging from the metal ring, requiring reinforced structural boning along the garment edges to prevent sagging. Adjusting fabric drape and accessory weight was essential during fitting to ensure natural, fluid posture on camera.
The shooting process posed considerable technical challenges. Selecting a vintage carved gold-framed mirror set against dark patterned olive-green wallpaper lent a mystical, vintage tone. Incorporating a mirror (creating a natural Mirror selfie dynamic) made focusing and managing double reflections extremely difficult. Avoiding glare while keeping facial reflections crisp without distracting lens flares severely tested the photographer's lighting control. Placing a softbox upper-side cast gentle light on the face while leveraging the metallic frame to shield stray ambient reflections. Using telephoto lenses with key fill lights, we adjusted angles repeatedly to find ideal alignment. Testing both high and low angles—high angles slimming the face while low angles heightening presence—we settled on a composition balancing both the mirror reflection and back silhouette. Continuously fine-tuning posture, back alignment, and wrist placement prevented any stiffness.
Emotionally, Ruan Mei conveys a sense of solitary focus. In this mirror-still frame, exaggerated expressions were unnecessary. I wanted to channel a tranquil Eastern aesthetic through attire and subtle gestures. She doesn't need grand movements to command attention—slightly cast-down eyes, compressed lips, and fingers gently brushing her collar ribbon serve as her quiet emotional outlets. My approach was to quiet myself completely, focusing on micro-movements of eyes and fingertips to project a weary yet soft, steady inner state infused with subtle Oriental elegance. Before this intricate gold-framed mirror, I hoped to share a narrative of aloof detachment laced with delicate melancholy.
Seeing the final frames through the viewfinder made every styling tweak and lighting arrangement feel deeply rewarding. Without flashy special effects or wild dynamic posing, the photos radiate a genuine inner tension. Shooting this Ruan Mei cosplay from prep to final edits was an immersive experience. The final deliverables yielded a wonderful chemical reaction between the quiet solitude of a dedicated researcher and the metallic sheen of the antique mirror. Unified in tone with soft, sophisticated color palette, I hope this cool and aloof vibe and poetic atmosphere reaches everyone.
