[Ruan Mei Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, Cold Echoes by the Lotus Pond

Before shooting this set of Ruan Mei cosplay photos, I had actually envisioned the composition and atmospheric vibe many times, and the final results truly did justice to the set design that day.

First, I have to talk about that inescapable funny issue: the size 39 cosplay shoes. It might not be super obvious in the photos, but during the actual shoot, my size 35 feet were basically slipping and sliding inside them. There aren't actually many shots wearing the shoes; for most seated poses, I simply went barefoot to add natural ease, as that feeling of toes desperately gripping the insoles inside high heels would directly affect my posture and expression.

For this shoot, we set the overall vibe to a Xianxia Chinese-style cosplay lotus pond in moonlight. The set design incorporated wooden armchairs, a large moon-shaped round screen with calligraphy scrolls, as well as real and faux lotus flowers on site. In particular, for the ground covering, a layer of highly reflective transparent material was used, paired with a few warm-toned classic lanterns. When sitting on the ground or chair, the floor refracted water ripple-like light and shadow effects, creating remarkably rich visual layering.

Regarding makeup and styling, Ruan Mei's outfit primarily features peacock blue and white chiffon; its off-shoulder and halter design is quite demanding on shoulder and neckline definition. To suit the character's temperament, I prepared light-colored contact lenses myself, combined with full eyeliner to enhance the cool, aloof feel of my gaze. Hair-wise, besides the wig's natural black base color, the cyan-blue highlights along the temples and ends were a custom touch I added, creating a lovely echo and extension with the clothing colors. The choker and pearl necklace around the neck, while not overly flashy, played a key connective role in the overall look.

Props were the highlight of this shoot. Although the modified yueqin (moon lute) was custom-made, it was undeniably heavy in hand. Balancing the lute's tilt angle with hand posture while taking standing shots took quite some time to repeatedly refine. The round silk fan featured a blue-green landscape painting, and its semi-transparent texture was perfect for guiding subtle movements of partially hiding or revealing.

Special thanks to photographer @HaibugouAnyi for their patience in this cosplay photography session. Looking at the light and shadow tuning, the background light source utilized soft bottom lighting, while facial fill-light leaned cool-toned, which highlighted the gentle mood of the entire scene just right. The ground was quite slippery during shooting, requiring careful attention to balance, but every time a good shot came up on screen, seeing that cool, quiet, atmospheric vibe made all the fatigue and re-takes feel completely worth it. Though the oversized shoes left a slight flaw in the final Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot, it unexpectedly became a memorable, vivid moment of this shoot. Perhaps next time I do a similar Chinese-style cosplay look, I'll still opt for better-fitting shoes to ensure the most natural state.
