[Ruan Mei cosplay] Xianzhou Charm in Honkai: Star Rail: Quiet Moments Captured on Mobile

I've finally sorted out a portion of the behind-the-scenes shots from this Ruan Mei cosplay shoot. Although these were casually recorded on a mobile phone, I really like the overall feel that came out.

This time I cosplayed Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail. This blue-and-white outfit actually features many intricate design details. From the neck embellishments and white turned-back cuff details to the blue waist sash and gold piping, every detail embodies the refinement belonging to Xianzhou Luofu. The Yueqin (or Pipa) prop held in my arms is also an essential element of the set design; its black-and-gold color scheme is beautifully paired, restoring the character's scholarly and refined elegance. I paid special attention to wig restoration as well, deliberately crafting side locks and wispy bangs across the forehead to contour my face shape, which, combined with cool eye makeup tones, faithfully captures her detached coolness.

Beyond the costume, I was genuinely thrilled with the set design this time. The solid wood daybed in the rear, wooden lattice background, and ink-calligraphy white drapes hanging above created a rich Ancient style cosplay aesthetic. A high-reflectivity material mimicking a water surface was laid across the floor, surrounded by green lotus leaves and pink, yellow, and red lotus blossoms, instantly producing a visual impression of leaning over to pluck lotus in water. Notably, when light cast onto the transparent film on the ground, creating dappled reflections and scattered light, even mobile photography successfully captured that shimmering, wave-glistening atmosphere.

Mobile photography sharing for cosplay has always been a recording method that many makeup artists and cosplayers enjoy trying. Compared to heavy DSLRs and complex professional lighting, smartphones are more portable and flexible for candid snaps. Among these behind-the-scenes shots, there is her delicate vulnerability cross-legged on the floor, her aloof coolness sitting on the bench cradling the lute in contemplation, and her serene solemnity gazing sideways at flower leaves. Particularly in the second image on the wooden daybed, letting her legs drop naturally while holding the instrument effectively embodies that ethereal, otherworldly detachment. In truth, I adjusted my posture for quite a while for this photo, wanting to soften body lines and avoid wooden stiffness; although mobile picture quality shows slight noise, I actually feel this raw texture gives the photos a richer documentary feel.

Taking behind-the-scenes footage is never an easy task. Because it's shot on a smartphone, pixels and aperture can't match dedicated cameras, so to achieve good results, we had to switch angles repeatedly to avoid huge blown-out highlights on the reflective film caused by overhead lights. Yet the reflective film was quite interesting—when I stepped onto it, the reflection beneath my feet was clearly visible. Going barefoot was a small detail I wanted to keep this time, as Ruan Mei's free-spirited, effortless grace matches sitting barefoot above water remarkably well. In this pond set environment, pairing barefoot feet with flowing hems not only softens the stiffness of posed shots, but also renders the image far more vivid and natural.

Doing cosplay isn't just about putting on clothes and taking pictures; it's a transient experience of character personality and inner aesthetics. With props and backgrounds fully in place, capturing that fleeting state through a smartphone camera makes me feel these photos possess greater vitality. Though these mobile BTS shots don't reach commercial-grade retouching standards, they authentically present the raw realism of the shooting venue. Through this photo set, I hope everyone can appreciate the Chinese ancient style softness and crisp grace embedded in this look. As for dress flow and instrument texture details, there remains much worth exploring further; given another chance, I hope to shoot another set with a professional camera to showcase this detached beauty to its absolute limit.
