Stepping out of the iconic maid uniform today and slipping into this blue-and-white striped sailor outfit, I soaked in a completely distinct, refreshing ambiance within a simulated indoor summer beach set. Portraying Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, I embraced a fresh styling departure this time. The wig was trimmed into a clean short bob, matched with ice-blue contact lenses that closely mirror the hair's hue. For makeup, emphasis went into the under-eye blush, swept across a broad area to forge a sun-kissed, lively summer flush, which paired with glossy pink lip lacquer to look delightfully radiant, youthful, and luminous before the lens. For wardrobe, I picked a cropped white sailor shirt accented with soft blue horizontal stripes, finished with a bright yellow neckerchief tied at the collar and paired with a white pleated skirt edged in blue. To accentuate the summer concept, I coordinated over-the-knee white Stockings detailed with blue stripes and dainty ribbon bows at the cuffs, complemented by a bold yellow scrunchie on my right wrist that made the colors pop dynamically across the frame.
Setting up the studio required plenty of dedication. The floor was laid with blue rippled sheeting to recreate the shimmering effect of sunlit water. In the background stood a wooden beach lounge chair flanked by artificial palm trees, instantly immersing the scene in vacation flair. The tabletop was lined with an assortment of props: sliced red-fleshed watermelon, green coconuts, white starfish, and a remarkably realistic ice cream waffle cone. To lean into the theme, I brought along a translucent baby-blue inflatable swim ring; hugging it or lounging inside naturally relaxed my body posture.
This shoot was captured using a Sony A7CR paired with the FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens. A mid-to-telephoto range is exceptionally comfortable for framing both mid-length and full-body portraits with environmental elements. The fast F2 aperture combined with indoor softboxes cleanly blurred the slightly busy background of deck chairs and foliage, all while faithfully retaining fine hair strands and fabric weaves. The 50-150mm focal range allowed seamless transitions between full-body seated compositions and facial close-ups without constantly shifting the tripod, achieving gorgeous spatial compression. Post-processing was handled in Capture One, where the grading strategy focused on preserving crisp cool tones, reigning in blown-out highlights on whites and blues, and gently pulling down ambient spill to make the subject pop cleanly against the setting, enhancing overall clarity.
During shooting, balancing simulated indoor backlighting with softboxes demanded precise light control. To ensure even illumination across my face, I adjusted the angle of the side-backlight. For seated poses on the swim ring or lounge chair, I leaned my torso slightly forward with legs crossed or draped casually, flattering proportions while showcasing the smooth lines of the white Stockings. When resting on the table edge, framing the watermelon and ice cream in the foreground added rich visual depth. One close-up shot focused on the ice cream, where chocolate scoops and rainbow sprinkles yielded vivid textures under the key light, harmonizing colorfully with the breezy set. Though a studio lacks real ocean breezes, prop placement and body language successfully evoked the desired summer spirit. Exploring this alternate look made the session immensely fun, and I hope this photo set spreads a refreshing splash of cool air.
