For this Wakaba Mutsumi cosplay shoot, my team and I invested a lot of energy into the preliminary preparations. From the design adjustments of the costume to the site set dressing, everything was prepared around a dark Gothic style. The core of the overall look is that black dress, matched with intricate lace and ruffles, and the huge black wide-brimmed formal hat on the head is the centerpiece, adorned with white lace and blue ribbons. To make the hat present the best three-dimensional sense in front of the lens, we did a lot of reinforcement work inside. The wig was chosen in ice blue; to maintain the smoothness of the hair strands and the natural curve of the bangs, it was specially styled for a long time before shooting to avoid reflection or frizz under strong light.
In terms of makeup, to fit the character's detached and gloomy temperament, I used a large area of red-brown blending around the eyes, increased the makeup feel of the lower eyelids, and paired it with amber contact lenses, trying to create a deep and slightly yandere visual effect. The lip makeup chose a nude-toned texture to avoid overly heavy overall makeup.
The studio scene setup has a very layered sense, with a huge red gear clock as the visual center, paired with vintage stone brick walls and hanging iron cages. To create a mysterious atmosphere, a large number of red roses and dead branches were placed on-site. The biggest challenge during shooting was actually lighting; to highlight the character's outline and the layering of the background, the photographer adopted a high-contrast lighting scheme with a cool blue main light and red-purple background lights. This collision of warm and cool light and shadow heavily tests the standing posture and facial orientation. The photographer and I constantly fine-tuned angles during shooting to ensure that the facial lines could be three-dimensional under the cool light while leaving nice highlights in the eyes. The gray plush rabbit in my hand is the soul prop; holding it can make limb movements more relaxed and neutralize some of the distance brought by the clothes.
In addition to studio shooting, we also specifically went to the outdoor metal stairs for location shooting. The nighttime cool-toned environment combined with Black stockings and platform shoes required extra caution when walking on the stairs—not only is there a risk of tripping over the skirt hem, but you also have to constantly pay attention so the stockings don't get snagged by metal edges. Wearing heavy clothing up and down the stairs was quite a drain on physical strength. The cooperation of the entire team in every aspect was very tacit, whether it was scene switching or fine-tuning of makeup and styling, all allowing this Wakaba Mutsumi cosplay to be completely presented. Although the Gothic Lolita clothing is heavy and tedious, the final light and shadow effect and the character fit are still very comforting.
