This shoot project was centered on a gothic theme for Wakaba Mutsumi. We actually invested quite a bit of time in pre-production styling discussions. To match the character's temperament as a White-haired girl, the makeup featured a cool-toned fair base, while the eye makeup deepened the eye sockets with dark eyeshadow and accented the inner corners with duochrome highlights. Paired with the silver-white wig, the overall aesthetic captured a cold yet fragile visual presence. The wig was straight and reached down to the waist; to preserve its sleek drape, we ironed it meticulously before shooting and applied ample setting spray to prevent static and frizz caused by indoor temperature shifts.
Regarding the outfit, it was a heavily detailed black Gothic Lolita dress. The neckline, cuffs, and hem were layered with voluminous lace and ruffles. To achieve better body proportions, a corset was worn at the waist; while wearing it for hours exerted noticeable pressure, the resulting silhouette was exceptionally sharp. The long black gloves further enhanced the overall refinement of the character.
The studio set was the core highlight of this project. We built a large metal birdcage, with the interior and surroundings wrapped in abundant red faux flowers and vines. To create a powerful visual impact for this Birdcage portrait, the gaffer used high-saturation red mood lighting as the key source, directed from the side and rear. This setup severely tested our control over exposure and color temperature on-site, as the diffuse reflection of red light can easily flatten image depth. We readjusted the angles multiple times until the red light fell precisely across the blossoms and the edge of my profile while preserving rich shadow detail across the black dress.
In several frames, I held a gray plush bunny. This prop was a clever addition—it softened the cold rigidity of the metal birdcage and the oppressive weight of the red-and-black palette, introducing a delicate touch of warmth and contrast. For the posing, I attempted extending one hand upward to graze the flowers, tilting my head back with eyes closed. Holding this pose while seated required tight core engagement to keep the arm line stretched gracefully rather than looking stiff. Between takes, I coordinated closely with the photographer on composition, ensuring the cage bars didn't create messy optical cuts across the lens.
Throughout the session, I continually sought an emotional state of being bound yet yearning for light. Between the sprawling black hem and the vibrant red floral sea, body language conveyed a silent, resonant tension. In post-processing, we avoided excessive liquifying, focusing instead on color balance and lighting enhancement to preserve the authentic tactile textures of the environment. From initial costume and wig preparation to studio lighting, staging, and pose refinement, every phase pushed past everyday boundaries, making this Dark style photography session a deeply fulfilling cosplay endeavor.
