This Sangonomiya Kokomi Original Design Lolita dress with a pink and blue shell style is actually from my old photo archives shot quite a while ago. When I first got this dress, my immediate feeling was that the print on the skirt hem and the overall color scheme fit the character's ocean-themed background perfectly. So, when an opportunity to visit the seaside came up, I immediately shot this set of photos.
This time, the outfit leans towards a customized original design style instead of completely replicating the original in-game attire, choosing a Lolita dress structure to present it. The neckline features a cream-white ruffled wood-ear edge design, paired with relatively puffy white organza short sleeves with small pink bows secured at the cuffs, making the entire upper body look highly refreshing and youthful. The biggest visual focal point on the chest is that massive pink satin bow, instantly elevating the sweetness of the dress.
The fabric of the dress has a touch of subtle shimmer, and the print is filled with ocean patterns like shells, starfish, and small fish. Because the overall base tone transitions between light blue and pale purple-pink, coupled with the marine life prints, it creates a glistening effect under light refraction. To echo the dress, the wig selected features a pink-to-aqua-blue gradient, styled into two symmetrical space buns on top of the head decorated with dark ribbons tied into bows. This not only adds layers to the styling but also makes the silhouette of the hairstyle more stable and three-dimensional.
Many cosplay enthusiasts might wonder why I choose to do an original design instead of the official version. Personally, I believe that as long as you grasp the character's core colors and temperament, an original design makes it easier for the outfit to blend into the environment during casual photo shoots. For instance, the essence of Kokomi lies in "water" and "Watatsumi Island," so when assembling this look, I heavily incorporated her pink, white, and blue color scheme. Paired with the dress's sea-breeze-like drape, it perfectly reproduces that lightweight atmosphere filled with tropical island vibes from the game. Even if the hairstyle and clothing cut vary slightly, the character's original elemental traits are never overshadowed.
The wind was actually quite strong on the day of the shoot, especially being by the sea where the oncoming sea breeze had a powerful impact. This caused the light blue ribbons originally tied around my arms and waist to fly wildly and uncontrollably in the air. Although shooting against the wind was a bit frantic, the flying ribbons unexpectedly brought a great deal of dynamic movement. In this kind of environment with soft natural light, the frame overall took on a cool grey-blue tone, further highlighting the tender, soft texture of the pink and blue dress itself during our beach photography session.
The thing I found most comfortable was that the lower hem of this costume actually featured a very spacious wide skirt. Though the layered skirt hem was somewhat long, the material was relatively light and thin, so walking along the beach didn't feel heavy at all. The sound of waves lapping the shore synchronized beautifully with the skirt fluttering in the wind. This experience of combining a fictional character's ocean vibe with a real, natural seashore is truly a memory worth preserving.
Even though these are just old pictures from my past archives, every time I look at them, I can recall the refreshing feeling of the sea breeze blowing at that time, which is exactly the charm of character outfit designs.
