[Sangonomiya Kokomi cosplay] Jellyfish Lamp Illuminating Serene Waters at Midnight: Genshin Impact Night Portrait

Crafting the glowing jellyfish umbrella prop for this Sangonomiya Kokomi cosplay truly took an entire afternoon. To achieve the ethereal, dreamlike Hydro element texture from Genshin Impact's character design, I poured immense effort into the LED light strip wiring and visual testing of this Glowing prop. For the umbrella ribs, I chose a lightweight aluminum frame as structural support, encircling the interior with high-brightness dual-color white and blue LED strips, layered with semi-sheer diffusion fabric to soften the light source and prevent harsh hot spots. Along the umbrella's outer rim, I sewed long sheer tulle tassels mimicking jellyfish tentacles. Crafted from transparent and pale-blue organza, these fringes catch the internal illumination to refract a crystalline, luminous shimmer reminiscent of deep-sea bioluminescence, playing a decisive role in sustaining the entire cosplay visual aesthetic. Judging by the final photos, that afternoon of calibration was a total success—the first close-up portrait completely captured the deep-sea ambiance I envisioned.

The shooting location was set at a waterfront pier in Chengdu, where the nocturnal water surface possessed mirror-like reflectivity. Finding this pristine reflective area was a stroke of good fortune; the water's reflection flawlessly mirrored the scene above, making the composition exceptionally rich and symmetrical. When framing, I deliberately placed the seated figure at the visual center of the frame—ensuring her silhouette did not press against the lateral edges while leveraging the water reflection to elongate vertical sightlines, guiding viewer focus toward the interaction between the Glowing prop and the model. This composition not only highlights the gentle grace of the female character in Girl photography, but also minimizes background clutter, seamlessly blending subject and atmosphere.

While the shoot proceeded smoothly, pre-production brought its share of challenges. For costume fabrics, I specifically selected materials with a subtle pearlescent shimmer to catch stray glimmers in dim night scenes, enhancing the dimensional contour of the figure. However, because the primary nighttime light source was concentrated on the overhead umbrella, we conducted multiple lighting tests to avoid harsh top lighting that could distort facial shadow structures. Ultimately, we relied on the umbrella's internal diffused reflection to illuminate the model's face, rendering skin textures delicate while allowing her eyes to reflect the character's signature tenderness. The wig styling was also meticulously calibrated prior to the shoot, with the curls at the ends and the drape of the sidelocks matching the character's default design. The model, Youyi, showed incredible dedication—braving the cold winter winds of Chengdu at night in lightweight cosplay attire, barefoot in sandals on the freezing concrete embankment. We adjusted her seated posture more than a dozen times to capture the ideal gaze and flattering leg contours.

As a cosplayer who frequently shoots night themes, I deeply understand the difficulty of capturing a Glowing prop in a Night portrait. Balancing aperture, shutter speed, and ISO is critical. If the aperture is too wide, the umbrella becomes an overexposed white glare, losing the fine details of the tassels; if the aperture is too narrow, the distant background city lights and water reflections lose their depth. We also needed to wait patiently for the warm city lights on the opposite bank to illuminate, creating a compelling warm-and-cool contrast that enriches the storytelling. In post-processing, while preserving the original cool-toned atmosphere as much as possible, I applied selective noise reduction to maintain image clarity under high nighttime ISO, crafting a serene and translucent visual effect. Throughout this process, what I value most is not just the final visual, but the harmonious unity of prop crafting, location scouting, lighting setup, and model presence. Seeing the jellyfish umbrella perform so satisfyingly and harmonizing with the dark waterfront was deeply rewarding. I hope this creative approach to night photography with glowing props provides useful inspiration for fellow creators.
