This shoot brought Keqing Opulent Splendor from Genshin Impact to life. I chose this outfit because of its exceptional structural design: the black-and-navy tones exude calm elegance, while the surface lace texturing and golden waist ornaments catch the studio lighting with exquisite tactile richness. To complement the overall aesthetic, I deliberately paired it with Black stockings; their subtle sheen under the lights added a refined visual depth across the frame. Crafting the wig was an extensive undertaking: the pale-lavender twintails had to be anchored atop the crown into those signature cat-ear odango shapes, neatly smoothed so no stray flyaways looked messy, with the ends flat-ironed silky smooth. For makeup, the focus centered on defining the gaze; violet cosmetic contacts paired with subtly winged eyeliner captured the character's poised disposition, with constant adjustments alongside the makeup artist to achieve the most flattering on-camera eye profile.
The set was adorned with lush pink cherry blossom branches draped over traditional tatami flooring. Crimson backdrops interwove with floral boughs alongside a violet paper parasol by my side, immersing the space in rich color saturation. Holding a round silk fan accented with small blue-and-yellow florets, I explored relaxed postures to showcase the garment's feminine softness before the lens. For seated compositions, I deliberately extended my legs toward one side, using the lines of the tatami weave as visual leading lines. Elongating the leg contours clad in Black stockings was an intentional compositional accent across this suite. Shooting from a slightly elevated high-angle perspective, the photographer captured both full-length wardrobe details and a lengthened silhouette through gentle perspective foreshortening.
The cuffs and skirt hems of this gown feature numerous delicate pleats and lace tiers that compress easily when seated, requiring constant gentle fluffing between takes to ensure organic drapery before the camera. The hand posture holding the round fan underwent endless tuning—from the grip on the handle to the relaxation of the wrist—all directly influencing the atmospheric subtlety of the frame. The goal was to ensure the subject felt genuinely immersed in the scene rather than simply wearing a costume. Between breaks, I reviewed raw takes with the photographer to examine specular highlights along the stockings and dial in the most flattering lighting angles.
Interpreting Keqing involved constantly pondering how to infuse her sharp, decisive competence with warmth and tender grace within such classical, delicate attire. Beyond outward garments, eye contact and micro-expressions carried immense weight. Across several shutter clicks, the aim was to seize a serene yet resolute composure. Mindful body language—shoulders dropped, spine gently straightened, paired with the interplay of concealing and revealing with the fan—sought a balance of static poise and lively presence.
Wrapping up the long session, while costume changes and styling resets demanded considerable endurance, seeing the final images where light, shadow, and fine details aligned made every effort deeply rewarding. The seamless harmony among garments, props, and environment made this a truly memorable endeavor, and I look forward to delivering more refreshing visual explorations next time.
