The overall tone for this shoot was established in a cool-toned pedestrian underpass. To capture Ms. Yamada's persona, I prepared a form-fitting white short-sleeved mini dress paired with a black leather jacket. Rather than wearing the jacket properly, I draped it halfway off the shoulders, combined with a black choker at the neck to channel an unruly, rebellious flair. For the lower half, I chose sheer Black stockings and white chunky-heeled ankle boots, creating a classic high-contrast clash of black, white, and red with intense visual punch.
The wig was styled with blunt bangs, complemented by crimson contact lenses and red lips. The makeup pursued a clean, cool direction without heavy contouring, prioritizing the sharp dimension of my facial features. The location was an underpass reminiscent of a vintage subway concourse. White tiled walls sliced through by prominent red stripes provided an inherently retro, cinematic backdrop. The parallel metal railings along the wall served as fantastic props—leaning against them, propping an arm, or dropping into a low crouch to elongate lines and make postures look effortless.
The crouched shot in Photo 2 sipping a drink was an unscripted candid catch. I simply wanted to find a resting point and take a sip of my drink, but the photographer spotted the angle—it not only flattered the waistline and thighs but also shattered the underpass's sterile chill with authentic, everyday intimacy. The purple-red packaging of the can became a vibrant focal point amidst the cold palette. The later seated pose holding a cigarette was strictly a stylized prop stance without lighting it, solely meant to evoke that paradoxical mix of languid calm and subtle danger.
Looking back across the Underpass photoshoot, managing the overhead fluorescent tubes was definitely the toughest hurdle, as overhead cool lighting tends to flatten facial contours. We spent considerable time adjusting angles and camera placement, using the shadows cast on the tiled walls to build depth. Leaning against the wall with one leg raised allowed the wall's shadow to echo the body's lines, sharpening compositional tension. The final cuts carry a rich cinematic grain; the sheen of the Leather jacket outfit and the sheer texture of the Black stockings registered beautifully under cool illumination. Because pedestrian traffic moved constantly, we seized brief windows between commuters. Crouching in block heels tested my ankles and leg stamina, yet seeing how cohesive the black-white-red palette merged with the red wall tiles made every bit of muscle strain worthwhile. Bringing this cool, edgy aesthetic to life through Yamada cosplay was a deeply satisfying experience.
