[Jabami Yumeko cosplay] Kakegurui: Place your bets - Image 1

This time, the shooting scene was moved directly to the bar counter and the gambling table, perfectly matching the character's home-ground atmosphere. Jabami Yumeko from Kakegurui inherently carries a strong sense of contrast. To express this yandere trait, we put a lot of thought into the styling, makeup, and lighting.

Let's talk about the clothing match first. The red suit jacket is the core of the entire look. To tone down the large area of red, it was paired with an inner white shirt and a black bow tie, while the lower body chose a classic black-and-white houndstooth short skirt, plus sheer black stockings; the overall color contrast is extremely strong. Since the character design is long straight black hair, I specifically used hair extensions to make the hair look thicker and present a better flowing feel under the wind blower. The most crucial part is actually the eye makeup and red colored contact lenses; the oppressive feeling of the gaze during the shoot completely relies on them, carrying a slightly crazy, unhinged smile, matched with the action of biting the name tag, and the vibe instantly comes together.

The layout of the shooting venue was also a major highlight. The green casino tabletop, stacked colored chips, scattered poker cards, and banknotes—these props provided a lot of room for creativity. I chose to kneel on the tabletop, partly because the low perspective of the wide-angle lens can lengthen the leg proportions, and partly because it better reflects the character's condescending yet slightly yandere sense of control during the gambling match. To increase the dynamism of the frame, a fan was blowing the whole time during the shoot, and after capturing many shots, we finally selected the moment where the hair was fluttering just right.

In terms of light and shadow, this time we didn't use flat, bright lighting; instead, the background was darkened, and the main light source came from the front-side, making the facial contours more three-dimensional. A slight blue-purple rim light was added to the edges of the hair, forming a cold-warm contrast with the red clothing, which also aimed to add a bit of a cyberpunk and retro mixed texture. The red-and-green color blocking was slightly boosted in saturation during post-production, and the resulting effect was stunning.

Actually, when shooting a character with somewhat dark and crazy attributes, the biggest difficulty lies in how to make the actions not awkward. I repeatedly watched her demeanor when placing bets in the original work, imitating that casual yet extremely fanatical feeling. We tried several amplitudes for the action of lifting the skirt hem, and finally chose the current angle that can both showcase curves and carry a hint of provocation. In terms of clothing material choice, I specially looked for a red suit fabric with a relatively crisp cut, so that even in a kneeling posture, the lines of the shoulders and back can still be supported. The houndstooth texture is very clear under the lens; to avoid stealing the spotlight from the clothes, other accessories were kept as simple as possible, with only a simple thin silver necklace. In terms of prop usage, I actually wanted to highlight the character's hand movements: left hand placed on the leg, right hand gently pinching the skirt hem—this state of seeming relaxed yet always ready to enter the game fits Jabami Yumeko's character setting very well. The red colored contacts will reflect light under illumination; by adjusting the angle of the face, it can make the eyes look more spirited, and combined with the small action of biting the name card, the dangerous yet charming atmosphere is maxed out directly. The entire shooting process was actually quite tiring, having to maintain that kneeling posture the whole time, but seeing the finished photos, the satisfaction of being immersed in the sense of story I created myself made it all completely worth it.
