The preparation process for this Lantern Rite-themed Shenhe cosplay shoot was actually far more intricate than I had anticipated. Because the background featured authentic classical Chinese furniture alongside vibrant red plum blossoms and golden drapery, great effort went into the color coordination—deliberately choosing a dark backdrop to accentuate the contrast of red and white without looking cluttered. For hair and makeup, to match the character's chilly persona, cool-toned blue contacts and a porcelain-pale foundation were paired with an expansive white fur collar; this interplay between winter warmth and aloof elegance made for a captivating contrast. During the shoot, to bring out the character's temperament, I was barefoot almost the entire time; stepping onto the dark reflective floor in the dead of winter sent a chill between my toes, and curling them naturally to convey effortless comfort took quite a few attempts.
A great deal of thought also went into selecting props: red envelopes, red scrolls, a red folding fan, and the snow-white plushie cradled in my arms all served to complement the celebratory New Year outfit atmosphere. In particular, the red envelope—an iconic New Year symbol—created a striking warm-cool contrast with the blue fabric ribbons of my attire. In terms of posing, seated or reclining postures sculpted the leg lines beautifully, visually elongating the silhouette. Complemented by background lighting and soft foreground bokeh, the framing gained richer dimensional depth. Since this was shot in a studio, the post-processing philosophy focused on restoring the authentic textures of the scene—enhancing red saturation and the deep richness of the blacks while preserving delicate skin textures, with subtle diffusion to emphasize the cool-toned ambiance.
Throughout the shoot, I continuously communicated angles with the photographer. Certain angles risked making the silhouette look bulky or compromising leg lines, so we explored numerous perspectives to achieve the optimal framing for this Traditional Chinese style cosplay series. Expression management was equally crucial to capture her calm composure: casting my gaze into the distance to evoke an unworldly, aloof aura. Merging traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary 2D anime styling requires constant self-adjustment and reflection. Although studio-based, to craft an immersive presence, we brought in real plum blossom branches and chose lustrous, silky fabrics that shimmered under cool light—one of the core visual concepts this piece aimed to convey. Regarding the makeup, the focus lay in the diffused eyeshadow gradients and the bold red lip gloss, granting the character both classical grace and modern 2D polish. Foregoing stockings or boots to retain the original barefoot design aligned more closely with her persona; this tested proportions, requiring pointed toes and arched insteps to flatter leg contours, which was leg-straining yet ultimately worthwhile.
Beyond braving the cold, the greatest hurdle was maintaining the crisp texture of the wig and fur collar. Continuous movement and adjustments easily tangled hair and flattened the fur, requiring the makeup artist's constant upkeep. For this New Year's Lantern Rite celebration, I also prepared subtle interactive gestures—gently fluttering the folding fan or holding up the red envelope with an air of anticipation—to invite viewers into the festive mood. All in all, this project crystallized the hard work of myself and my team, showcasing the character's allure alongside a unique New Year aesthetic: the true charm of marrying traditional culture with 2D art.
