"Life will inevitably wither." When conceptualizing this photoshoot, that phrase echoed continuously in my mind. It is not a mournful sigh, but a calm, objective acknowledgment of a law of nature. To align the final cosplay photos with this ambiance, I did extensive homework—from costume and prop preparation to fine-tuning my mindset during the shoot.

The garment details were far more intricate than I anticipated. Across the blue-and-white fabric, rigid gilded openwork ornaments accentuate the waist and skirt hem, while bright azure tassels adorn the collar and shoulders, breaking up the predominantly cool palette. The long black gloves with metallic trims and delicate accents not only elongate the arms, but lend a sense of decisive authority fitting a scholar. The round fan in hand, painted with blooming red plum blossoms, creates a vivid contrast against the costume and serves as an exceptional visual guide during posing.

To complement the classical Chinese ambiance, the set featured an expansive ink-wash calligraphy backdrop and a lotus screen to the right. A pure white background illuminated by softboxes produced a clean, high-key photography effect. Since high-key lighting can easily flatten an image, I anchored the scene with a dark mahogany chair. Rather than adopting a formal, upright posture, I chose to sit angled with legs crossed, looking back toward the camera. This pose visually elongates the leg lines, while the subtly reclined shoulder-and-neck curve introduces effortless physical tension into the glance. Resting the round fan against the shoulder formed a visual triangle that kept the composition balanced and enduring.

Controlling the gaze was the true core of this session. Ruan Mei carries an aloof detachment born of having seen through the essence of life. Before each shutter click, I reflected on the theme of life's inevitable decay. Avoiding forced coyness or contrived coldness, I kept my gaze empty, looking into the lens with a faint, imperceptible warmth. To achieve smooth gradient transitions along the legs, a reflector was positioned to the side, ensuring the skin maintained a translucent, luminous texture under strong illumination rather than looking pale and washed out.

In post-processing, heavy filters were avoided in favor of preserving the authentic textures of the fabric and the realistic light-shadow interplay. This set is more than just character replication—it is an exploration of traditional Chinese visual aesthetics. When the shutter froze the frame, though life must wither, the imagery immortalized its quietest bloom. I hope everyone feels the unique charm sparked by the fusion of classical Chinese aesthetics and this character.
