From preparing this cosplay photoshoot until now, I have been constantly thinking about how to properly capture the spirit of Shiki Eiki. Facing the camera, that slightly solemn yet cool and detached expression always makes me feel the need to settle my state of mind. To restore the temperament of this judge as I first saw her, we deliberately avoided the usual warm tones of courtyards this time, choosing instead this Chinese-style corridor with red pillars and gray bricks for the shoot.
In terms of details, the texture of this costume is truly worth discussing. The dark blue patterned fabric reflects a silk-like shimmer under natural light, which, paired with the reddish-brown buttons adorned on the chest, nicely balances the cool tones, presenting a flavor where tradition and fantasy intertwine. The headpiece is a crucial part; this headband with layered white ruffles and black ribbons, accented with gold, is not overly exaggerated yet preserves the character's own recognizability. The white and red dual-colored ribbons on the cuffs are details I really like; that visual sense of tying them into knots beautifully brings out the tension of the entire outfit while adding a vibrant warm color to the overall cool-toned frame. The small circular prop held in my hand perfectly fills the void of body language, giving my hand a natural resting spot when leaning against the pillars without looking rigid.
Shooting on location is actually much more difficult than studio shooting, especially under changing light conditions, requiring reliance on natural light to create the atmosphere. For this set of photos, I didn't intentionally use strong fill light, choosing instead to utilize the shadows between the corridor's architecture and the filtered diffused light to highlight a cool, detached, and slightly melancholic texture. When leaning against the mahogany pillars, the roughness and historical weight touched by my fingertips actually formed a very interesting interaction with the character's identity. We tried many angles during the shoot and finally decided on this half-turned, downcast-eyed composition, feeling that this posture is more capable of expressing the delicate emotions within the character's heart. Coupled with the blurred green trees in the background and the distant lake surface, the entire image gains a narrative feel, as if placing one outside a quiet Gensokyo, silently observing everything in the world.
Speaking of fanon, the fan culture of Touhou Project is truly fascinating. Not only do the characters themselves have profound backstories, but the charm of Touhou fanon also lies in bringing many different facets to them. For instance, the character Shiki Eiki inherently carries a lot of deep thoughts on right and wrong, black and white in the original work (such as Touhou Kaeinzuka), but in front of the lens, I leaned more towards expressing her fanon persona—one that is authoritative yet holds a touch of confusion and melancholy. Therefore, in controlling the overall style of this cosplay photoshoot, I deliberately toned down that aloof, judgmental air, wishing instead to present a state that drifts between seriousness and a girly feel. The relaxation of movements, the facial micro-expressions—every detail required continuous coordination with the photographer and makeup artist to finally freeze into the frame you see now.
When shooting this set, the weather wasn't particularly sunny, but it was precisely that soft light of an overcast day that made the colors of the costume appear more composed, giving the photos more room for texture. In fact, every creation of a cosplay photoshoot is a test of one's ability to understand the character, because it's not just about putting on clothes, but also about pondering what kind of actions and expressions the character would show in a specific scene. The Shiki Eiki in this photo set might be a bit different from many people's understanding, but this is indeed the fanon state I wanted to express at this current moment. Through this background of red walls and green shadows, integrating the character into an environment filled with a natural atmosphere and ancient charm completes the expression of this creation. I have done my best to restore the image in my heart, and I hope the final atmosphere allows everyone to feel another side of this character.
