For this outdoor cosplay shoot of Touhou Project's Alice Margatroid, the core props were red strings and the grimoire. The costume featured her classic blue dress, detailed with golden-yellow crisscross laces across the chest, a prominent pink bow tied at the waist, and an expansive openwork lace capelet draped over the shoulders. To align more closely with her puppeteer concept, I prepared a vintage grimoire bound with red-and-white crisscross straps, alongside generous lengths of thin red string used to build spatial depth.

The location was set upon rocky outcrops along the water's edge. The afternoon sunlight was quite intense, allowing the teal-blue water in the background to form a harmonious color dialogue with the blue-and-white palette of the outfit. When interpreting her battle stances, the crux lay in how the red strings were wound. The strings could not be pulled too taut, or they would cut into the fingers and disrupt subsequent shooting; conversely, if kept too loose, the taut visual tension would vanish. In Figure 3, leaning forward slightly with one hand braced against the rock while the other guided the red string, my gaze locked onto the lens to convey an oppressive coexistence of control and binding. Figure 2, by contrast, is a medium close-up: hands folded, fingertips hooking the string, where the blue contact lenses and blonde hair took on a crystalline clarity in the backlight.

Regarding makeup and styling, I used a light-blonde wavy wig paired with a bonnet adorned with pink lace ribbons. The eye makeup deepened the contours to complement the blue-grey contact lenses, while distinct blush was swept across the cheeks to evoke porcelain, doll-like refinement. On the lower half, brown lace-up tall leather boots not only eased movement across the rugged rocks, but also lent structural weight to the overall silhouette, preventing the abundance of lightweight lace from appearing too insubstantial. The wig's curl was freshly restyled with a curling iron before setting out; waterside winds are strong, and without thorough pre-setting, stray strands would whip around and ruin the composition. The grimoire prop carried notable heft on its own, requiring precise wrist control when holding it one-handed to keep from obscuring the delicate lace collar details.

Outdoor shoots come with numerous unpredictable variables, as wind direction and sunlight angles shifted constantly. To form an interlocking web pattern with the red strings in frame, we tested multiple stances and finger angles. Because thin red thread easily disappeared into background blur before the camera, we ultimately switched to slightly thicker cord, pairing it with wide apertures to capture the desired crispness. Alice embodies both the delicate refinement of a doll and the commanding presence of high-tier magic. Through physical expression, I strove to faithfully summon her calm, mysterious aura. From prop fabrication to field shooting, tremendous thought went into this set, and seeing the lace trims and book textures glow under the captured light made for an immensely satisfying shoot.
