This teaser for the Touhou Project Moriya Suwako cosplay photoshoot is finally released. This shoot was deliberately selected near natural moss-covered rocks by the waterside. The fog was heavy that day, and the light presented an extremely soft diffuse reflection, making the entire environment appear exceptionally ethereal and clear.
A lot of details were considered during the costume making: the edge of the straw hat features special pleats and is paired with a purple ribbon; the top has complex golden lacing and purple printed textures; the small tassel pendants on the lower hem of the skirt sway naturally when walking. The green lotus leaf stem held in my hand retains its long root, giving it a substantial feel when gripped. The combination of bare feet and white loose socks also preserves the character's iconic visual elements.
Standing on that slightly damp black-gray rock, tilting my head down slightly and resting a finger against my chin, I hoped to restore that lively yet slightly mysterious temperament. The reflection on the water surface was very clear, and fine ripples would ripple away whenever the wind blew. Although the lighting was soft, there were many mosquitoes by the outdoor waterside in summer; to capture this moment of tranquility, the photography and support team endured for a long time. Many thanks to photographer Yansi for the patient guidance, constantly adjusting the camera position to find a framing sense among the water surface, reflection, and treetops. Special thanks to assistant Huihuizi for helping on-site to tidy up messy costume edges and secure the lotus leaf.
To find this shooting spot that naturally fits the character's temperament, we walked back and forth along the shore for a long time. Stepping on the slippery rocks and feeling the cool lake water on the soles of my feet actually made it easier to immerse myself into the character's context. The branches and leaves stretching overhead formed a very natural frame at the top of the image, concentrating the visual focus on the character in the gorgeous attire, beautifully capturing this outdoor portrait.
The costume itself is made of a relatively thick material with many layers of ruffles and lacings, but against this minimalist waterside photography background with large areas of negative space, it highlights the costume's own refinement and layering even more. The straw hat paired with the lotus leaf is a highly recognizable element of this character. In terms of light and shadow processing, the entire set of photos intentionally lowered the background highlights, allowing the main subject to softly emerge from the environment.
As the cosplayer for this set, I kept trying to find the state the character should naturally present in the environment rather than just a simple restoration of the costume. The humid air by the water, the moss-covered rocks, and the lotus leaves standing in the water—these elements created a wonderful chemical reaction with the mystery of the water god in the Touhou Project worldview. This teaser image already allows one to feel that slightly chilly, serene atmosphere.
The costume's color scheme is mainly composed of purple, gold, and white, which is very complex and actually places high demands on exposure control in outdoor high-light environments. The photographer primarily used a large-aperture telephoto lens this time, emphasizing the sense of depth and making the water surface appear more profound. The character is entirely enveloped in a broad composition while retaining the soles of the feet and the reflection. Next, I will continue to organize more photos from different angles for the final Cosplay photoshoot, and I sincerely hope everyone will like this shoot completed by the waterside.
