The official photos from this shoot are finally out. I prepared for quite a long time, putting a lot of thought into everything from costume modification to scene setup. To portray the character Hinako Shimizu cosplay, I communicated with the photographer for a long time in advance, wanting to restore an atmosphere that is shattered, gloomy, and carries a hint of alienation. The base of the costume is a black Sailor suit, but I treated the hem and cuffs with tearing and frayed edges, adding the chest scarf and some small strap details to enhance that ruined feeling. The most crucial parts are the bestialized arm and the beast mask with red light. Once worn, the person's aura instantly changes, and paired with the long staff and blood-red Spider Lilies, the visual impact is extremely strong.
The scene on the day of the shoot was built using white netting, thick fake bones, and dead branches, with the ground covered in red Spider Lily props. To match the overall atmosphere, a dual-color red and blue lighting scheme was used on-site. The main light used high-saturation red light hitting from the back-side to simulate a dangerous and bloody environment, while cool-toned cyan-blue light was used for fill from the front and side-bottom. This kind of lighting and shadow has high demands on the camera's dynamic range and light positioning; if the blue light is too strong, it will ruin the red light's atmosphere, so the angles had to be adjusted repeatedly. The damaged edges on the clothes have a very distinct texture under the backlight, giving the whole frame a cyberpunk mixed with dark gothic feel.
In terms of action design, we tried many interactions. One set features a giant beast paw reaching in from outside the frame to stroke the character's head; I slightly raised my head and closed my eyes, wanting to express a state of being suppressed, controlled, or struggling internally. There are also looking back while holding a long staff and the posture of holding the staff ready for battle, where the gaze needs to be sharp and the actions crisp. For the close-up group holding red Spider Lilies in hands, I deliberately smeared some red liquid on my hands, which, combined with the form of the flowers, reflected a sense of sacrifice and eerie vitality. To prevent the facial features from appearing flat amidst the intersecting red and blue lights, I constantly fine-tuned my face orientation during the shoot, making one side of the face catch the highlight as much as possible while the other fell into shadow to enhance dimensionality.
In post-processing color grading, I slightly darkened the background details to make the color of the red Spider Lilies stand out more, while retaining the cold texture of the blue light hitting the skin. In fact, the core of this whole set of photos is to express the character's state under a certain extreme environment, so the body language couldn't be too relaxed. The wig is prone to reflection under strong light, and I used a lot of hairspray during the shoot to fix the styling, keeping it as close to the character's setting as possible. Although the process was exhausting, the moment I saw the finished photos, I felt it was all worth it. I wanted to present that sense of storytelling where blood and Spider Lilies intertwine, as well as the half-human, half-beast visual impact. I hope everyone can feel this unique charm from the photos.
