This time, I'm sharing a Yuki Minakami Cosplay Makeup test from Wonderful Everyday Down the Rabbit-Hole. The character Yuki Minakami possesses a unique sense of detachment; tied to the theme of "Discontinuous Existence," I constantly pondered during this Makeup test how to use visual language to express that ethereal yet tangible state. For base makeup, I opted for a semi-matte foundation without overly bright highlighters, focusing instead on blush to evoke a slightly tipsy yet pale aesthetic. The eye makeup was the focal point this time: while brown contact lenses softened my gaze, they lacked depth, so I emphasized the lower lashes by brushing them out into distinct, clearly defined strands with mascara, paired with slender eyeliner to elongate the eye shape, giving the gaze a subtle, inquisitive scrutiny.
Trimming the wig was another major undertaking. To replicate the original design's heavy blunt bangs and elongated side locks, I layered and trimmed it several times. The crown was partially tied up to give the head silhouette fuller volume, preventing it from looking flat. Pinning two white rectangular bobby pins on the left side might be a small detail, but it makes a massive difference in character fidelity. Wearing a black leather choker around the neck paired with a red tie brought forth a compelling clash between ascetic restraint and rebellious defiance for this Uniformed girl look.
The outfit is a basic white shirt, but I deliberately popped the collar slightly to look sharper. For props, I selected a bouquet of bright yellow Sunflowers. The vibrant yellow Sunflower bouquet against the cool blue backdrop created a sharp color contrast, instantly bringing life to the composition. During shooting, we tested diverse camera angles—some facing the lens directly, others looking slightly upward, while altering hand gestures holding the flowers. Cool-toned blue-violet lighting on the face easily washes out facial depth, requiring constant mindfulness of facial angles to keep light planes smooth while utilizing shadows to carve out defined contours. Though this lighting was challenging, the resulting ambiance was perfectly in tune with the cool, moody texture intended for this Makeup test. A Makeup test is an ongoing journey of trial and error. While this session captured the character's overarching essence well, honing the exact gaze still needs practice, aiming to portray that singular presence even more incisively in the final photoshoot.
