[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion's Third Child, Happy Birthday

This set of photos is a Makeup test specifically created for today's special occasion. Since it is her Birthday, I wanted to step slightly away from the strict original canon—retaining the soul of the character while incorporating my own interpretation of the outfit, a so-called Ayanami Rei custom design. This time, I chose a black turtleneck sweater, using basic black to accentuate the light blue short hair and red irises, creating a high-contrast, cool-toned palette.

In terms of makeup, I focused on achieving a flawless base, using high-coverage liquid foundation and setting powder for a fully matte finish to recreate a pale, doll-like texture. The eyes were the highlight: alongside the large-diameter red contact lenses, I used grey-brown eyeshadow to deepen the eye sockets. For the lower lashes, I deliberately applied individual lash clusters that were relatively long and distinct, so that when looking straight into the camera, it would create an ethereal gaze that seems to pierce right through the lens.

The wig was another crucial element. To prevent it from looking overly heavy, the bangs were thinned out significantly, and hair wax was used to shape a few loose strands that partially obscure the view, creating an effortless, casual vibe. For the black outfit, I chose a relatively structured knit fabric with low sheen, which minimizes unwanted glare during the shoot and forms an extreme contrast with the hair. While the character's canonical outfit carries a distinct futuristic sci-fi feel, switching to a black turtleneck brings a sense of purity stripped of external mechanics.

For such an intensely quiet character, the focus of expression lies in an unfocused, vacant gaze paired with a stiff, slightly unnatural stillness. To convey this, I emptied my mind of emotion during the shoot, regulated my breathing, and repeatedly adjusted the angle of resting my cheek on my hand, striving to capture an isolated, alienated, and chilling ambiance. Even though this was a Makeup test, I hoped the final images would deliver a cinematic, cool-toned aesthetic.

During photo retouching, I intentionally controlled the tones to avoid making them overly muted or grey, keeping the face porcelain white while maintaining a pale pink nude texture on the lips. No complicated backdrops were added throughout; a minimalist grey background was used solely to keep the subject as the singular focus and directly communicate emotion. Moreover, the shoot took place during the day using soft side lighting, which balanced the light and shadow across both sides of the face and concentrated the catchlights in the eyes, adding a focused vitality to the gaze.

Because this styling incorporated custom design elements that deviate from the canon design, I sincerely apologize to friends who prefer strict fidelity to the original. I hope this Birthday attempt allows everyone to see a different facet of her. On this special day, I hope you can feel this slightly unique tribute, which is my own little sense of fan ritual.
