[Shu cosplay] Arknights Ambience Synesthesia Shu: Dark-Toned Convention Photos Review

This is a convention photo from October's CPSP, which I took time to retouch yesterday. I'm the type of slow-editing cosplayer who focuses on one signature shot; even though we took lots of raw shots that day, I ultimately decided to share this one. This outfit is Shu from Arknights in her Ambience Synesthesia design. To achieve a clean, dark background ambiance on the day of the shoot, we deliberately found an empty corner outside the venue. Since the outfit is made of white sheer tulle with great light transmission, I agreed with the photographer to use a stronger frontal flash to illuminate the dress details from within, letting the bright orange-yellow straps in the foreground stand out against the dark backdrop.

The horns on top feature a blue-to-yellow gradient, with one horn shaped like tree branches, which wobbled slightly while walking around the convention—a real test for wear stability. The wig is silver-white with deep blue highlights; because it's long and light, it easily got tousled by the wind. To capture the character's serene coolness, I chose a cool-toned porcelain base makeup, paired with light blue contact lenses and smudged grayish-blue eyeshadow. However, blue contacts are very sensitive to lighting and can easily reflect harsh light like reflectors in messy convention lighting. To keep the eyes looking clear and translucent, I communicated with the photographer multiple times to calibrate the lighting angles.

The pose for the shoot was curling up on a mat with legs crossed. Since the lower hem of the dress is semi-sheer tulle, this seated pose nicely accentuated the leg lines. During the shoot, to emphasize the character's elegant aura, I carefully adjusted the folds of the necklace and the orange scarf on my chest. I chose this photo as the cover because the composition places the subject centered, while the blurred background lights form a series of beautiful bokeh without any passersby photobombing. Post-processing mainly focused on color grading: darkening the background and boosting highlight contrast to make the folds of the white tulle pop while retaining a gentle warm ambient glow.

Because this was shot in the fast-paced environment of a convention, many details couldn't be adjusted repeatedly like in a studio. However, as convention photos, being able to freeze such a tranquil moment with this overall atmosphere was very satisfying. This outfit and prop set have many intricate details and are time-consuming to put on and take off, but seeing the high-contrast light-and-shadow effect in the final cosplay photography shot made all the preparation worthwhile.
