Standing in the modern indoor corridor of the comic convention, holding this gorgeous staff with a mechanical texture, I began this convention photoshoot for Zenless Zone Zero's Astra Yao under the overhead strip lights. The details of this outfit are really worth appreciating. Unlike conventional skirt designs, the white cinched tube top paired with detachable wide red sleeves creates a visually striking contrast that looks both sleek and gorgeous. The pearl necklace at the collar and the round metal pendant on the chest add plenty of layers to the outfit. The golden star decorations accenting both sides of the skirt are definitely the finishing touches, and today's thigh harness straps fit perfectly with the long-leg silhouette. The focus of today's shoot was also to express this unique sense of rhythm, so special attention was paid to dynamic motion capture of the props and hair strands.
Wearing this cosplay made me realize how crucial the synergy between the wig and props is. The silver-gray long hair with straight bangs has a lot of volume, and its flowing feel needs the help of a fan or the venue's breeze to show up nicely. To capture that tension between hair strands and the air, as well as the moments when the skirt flutters in the wind, the photographer spent a lot of time adjusting light angles and timing the snaps. The staff was my favorite part: its spherical tip, embedded mechanical rings, and long shaft all carry a strong sci-fi tech feel, giving it a solid weight in hand. While waving it and holding it upright for a long time drained some physical stamina, this physical weight actually helped me settle down in front of the camera and maintain an upright, confident posture.
Convention photos are distinctly different from studio shoots. The ambient light is quite complex; strip lights on the ceiling formed hard glare spots, setting high demands for makeup shine control and fabric textures. To ensure the red-and-white color scheme remained bright and sharp under cool lighting, we specifically adjusted camera angles to let the light outline highlights along the edges of the silver hair strands. Meanwhile, the wide red sleeves fluttering in the wind became a dynamic splash of color in the frame. Standing in the space with hair and skirt blown by the wind, it perfectly froze the character's calm, noble, and slightly detached temperament.
Walking back and forth around the venue to find the best shooting angles in these metallic high heels, combined with the single-sided thigh harness strap, was quite a test of ankle strength. But undeniably, this styling elongates body proportions beautifully. Paired with the custom-made white skirt, the movement of the skirt hem and the extension of the leg lines during walking reflected the character's unique style. During the shoot, I needed to manage my expressions carefully, finding a balance between focus and subtle expressions—conveying confidence during combat or casting spells without looking stiff under changing lights.
From the moment I picked up the prop, I realized the success of this convention photo shoot largely depended on how I held the staff. To prevent stiff poses, I tried various angles such as holding the shaft with one hand, leaning it vertically on the ground, or tilting it forward slightly. This metallic prop was quite heavy, giving off a distinct cold metal touch in my palm. The photographer continuously guided me to tilt my chin up slightly to display the V-line formed by the necklace and collar. Especially in close-up shots, the white tight cinched-waist design paired with exposed shoulder lines thoroughly showcased the outfit's sleekness.
As for details, the silver shiny high heels were also an indispensable component of this look. Reflecting the light from the ceiling strip lamps, they created shadows on the floor that blended smoothly into the cool white lighting ambiance. From a low angle, the stretched instep and elongated leg lines, combined with the pearl thigh ring, instantly grabbed the visual focus of the image. Standing amid the bustling crowd at the convention, with other photographers and attendees stopping by, focusing my attention into the camera lens and character helped me naturally project the character's effortless aura.
Documenting these convention photos was not just a simple shutter-clicking game, but a process of gaining a deeper understanding of the character design's charm. From the pearl decoration at the collar to the star pendants on the skirt, and the layout of the thigh straps, every element rendered under the camera made me feel that all the meticulous preparation of props and costume was completely worth it. The combination of pure white and bold red, interwoven with strip lighting shadows on set, left a unique mark for this character. I tried different poses in two final shots: the close-up highlighted makeup details and upper-body tension, while the wide shot intentionally elongated my silhouette, displaying the staff's straight posture and the overall skirt shape.
The photoshoot process for this cosplay went very smoothly. Although standing and walking in high heels all day was tiring, seeing the final photos with flowing hair, an upright staff, and perfectly restored colors delivered exactly the gorgeous yet powerful visual effect I hoped to show. I hope sharing this set of convention photos brings everyone the immersive experience created by this makeup, styling, and on-site lighting setup.
