[Yukimura Chieri Cosplay] Catching a Leisurely Cat at Firefly ACG Expo

For this Firefly ACG Expo, I chose to cosplay Yukimura Chieri from Amairo Chocolate. This costume has plenty of details, with the ruffled sailor collar and deep blue pleated skirt carrying strong character traits. The overall color palette is dominated by white, blue, and silver-gray, which along with the pink-and-white animal ears and fluffy cat tail, gives off a refreshing and soft, cute visual experience. To make it convenient to wear, I specially reinforced the hairpins and the wig, so even with a gentle breeze, there's no need to worry about the cat ears or bangs shifting easily.

Regarding makeup, to match Yukimura Chieri's setting, I adopted a reddish hangover-style blush. I didn't intentionally draw heavy shadows on the eye makeup, but instead used large-diameter colored contact lenses to make my gaze look clearer and more innocent. Paired with the straight-cut blunt bangs and a thin black rope choker, it reproduces the unique temperament of the character quite well. The venue for shooting these convention photos was an outdoor rest area on the periphery of the expo. This kind of outdoor wooden flooring with green plants and a light-colored sofa is actually highly favorable for natural light photography. The light filtered down through the leaves, forming very natural highlights on the white stockings and sailor suit, saving a lot of trouble with lighting.

In terms of pose design, I tried my best to find some natural and casual sitting postures. For instance, actions in the frame like sitting on the edge of the sofa, or supporting myself on the sofa cushions with both hands while turning my head to look at the lens, are quite consistent with this character's well-behaved yet energetic traits. The first action of lifting my hand to touch my ears was also meant to highlight the nimble aura of a Catgirl, while mimicking cat paws while sitting on the sofa backrest aimed to add a bit more playful flavor. White stockings paired with black leather shoes is a classic anime match, which doesn't look out of place at all even in an outdoor casual scene like this. The leather handbag behind me was actually an excellent prop; placing it on one side of the sofa enriched the composition layers of the frame, preventing the line of sight from resting entirely on the person and adding a sense of narrative.

Actually, the convention site was extremely crowded, so finding a relatively quiet corner to do an outdoor shoot was not easy. This time, the photographer paid special attention to avoiding the chaotic crowds in composition, while trying to retain the depth of field of the greenery in the background. Shooting white clothes under intense outdoor light is actually quite difficult to control exposure, as the clothes can easily become overexposed and lose texture. Fortunately, our photographer managed the lighting ratio beautifully, keeping the ruffles on the sailor suit and the shadows of the pleated skirt perfectly intact. The final photo effects turned out much better than I imagined.

The experience of presenting this work was great because this costume doesn't have overly bulky accessories or complex armor, allowing for relative freedom of movement without feeling stuffy even when walking around outdoors. Meeting fellow fans at the expo who recognized this character brought mutual knowing smiles. This is exactly the joy cosplay brings to me—using location shoots to record the characters I've carefully prepared, bringing flat 2D characters into real-world three-dimensional scenes.

However, I must admit that managing Yukimura Chieri's long wig did take quite a bit of time. Because the hair volume is massive, to comb it smooth and ensure zero frizz, I went over it with wig care solution before heading out. Additionally, fixing this plush cat tail took some effort, ensuring it could maintain a beautiful angle whether standing, sitting, or leaning forward like in the picture, rather than drooping onto the ground and getting dirty. Later, once the convention photos are fully edited, I might select a few more groups of photos with different lights and shadows to share.

Overall, this outdoor shoot of Yukimura Chieri at Firefly ACG Expo was highly smooth, and the weather was super cooperative. Using this sailor suit and white stockings combination, with the outdoor greenery as a backdrop, truly captured a refreshing sense of atmosphere. I hope there will be more opportunities in the future to try character photography of similar types, using the lens to present a more authentic and natural side of cosplay.
