I have been planning this Kagamine Rin VOCALOID Lolita custom design cosplay for quite some time, starting with putting a lot of thought into the choice of clothing. Since the setting is a custom design, I hoped to preserve Kagamine Rin's intrinsic lively yet slightly cool traits, while simultaneously magnifying the visual effect through the gorgeousness of Lolita. Therefore, I ultimately settled on this black-and-gold military-style Lolita outfit coordination.

As for the details, the upper body adopts an altered cut. The fringe epaulets on the shoulders instantly max out that British honor guard vibe, which, combined with the white bowtie at the collar and the golden piping embellishing the bodice, prevents the black-based garment from looking dull. The design of the skirt hem returns to Lolita sweetness—the outer layer is a black tiered skirt spliced with pale golden ruffles along the edges, and a delicate metal pendant hangs from the large bowtie at the waist, creating a slight swaying motion when walking.

For the props in this shoot, I specially sought out a long-handled cane. In fact, a cane is a perfect match for military-style Lolita; holding it in hand can both project an aura and allow body movements to be more extended when the angles are well-adjusted. In the photography studio, I sat on a white cylindrical pedestal, and this cane became my prop to extend my body language. Whether resting my crossed hands on the cane or holding it straight with one hand, it presented different visual lines.

In terms of makeup and styling, the blonde wig paired with blue colored contacts recreates the most core, iconic elements belonging to this character. The hair accessories are adorned with black mesh bows and metal-textured small clips, highly matching the dark and gorgeous outfit. Long black gloves are also a killer move to increase the completion of the look. Paired with black sheer socks featuring a subtle diamond lattice pattern and glossy, thick-soled chunky heels, the visual center of gravity extends downward, boosting the overall presence.

During the shoot, the lighting selected a warm orange gradient background, simulating a high-end studio atmosphere. In terms of professional cosplayer performance, I tried to find a balance between sweetness and coolness. The semi-leaning, semi-sitting posture makes the frame more relaxed, and the moment the high heels tilt upward also prevents the image from looking rigid. In fact, the charm of a custom design cosplay lies precisely in the absence of so many constraints from official settings; I can fuse different subculture styles into this single character based on my own understanding. The curvature of this Lolita petticoat is just right, propping up the fluffiness of the skirt hem without being overly exaggerated or stealing the spotlight.

Many people ask what counts as a successful custom design cosplay. I believe that as long as the overall color scheme, the richness of details, and the character's expressiveness achieve unity, then it is a successful attempt. This costume looks heavy and complex, but it's actually quite convenient to move around in once put on, especially when spinning the skirt hem, where the dynamic movement of the fringes and ruffles is very intense. During the shoot, I specially chose several low-angle and side-overhead perspectives; this close-up portrait (cover photo) beautifully combines the character's facial exquisiteness with the gorgeousness of the upper body costume, free from too many cluttered elements, making the visual focus exceptionally clear.

Lastly, I want to say that removing a character from official settings and reinterpreting them using a culture like Lolita, which similarly emphasizes a sense of exquisiteness, is quite an interesting thing to do. I hope this black-and-gold custom design conveys a feeling that is both elegant and a bit dashing. Through this studio cosplay photography experience, I am also more certain that styles with certain uniform attributes like Lolita are indeed directions highly worth unearthing in custom design cosplay.
