Shooting this set of photos for Arknights Shu cosplay was actually a tangible attempt at quiet Eastern aesthetics. When deciding on the theme of "The Sui Siblings," I kept pondering how to convey the character's serenity and detachment through the lens. A lot of effort went into building the scene this time: woven bamboo mats, wooden lattice screens, and vintage paper lanterns glowing with a warm yellow light formed a beautiful contrast of warmth against the overall cool cyan and blue color tones.
This massive fluffy tail was the most elaborate part of the styling this time. The tail is divided into a white segmented main body and blue-and-yellow gradient feathers at the tip, possessing highly rich textures. During the shoot, I had to carefully adjust its positioning angle to let it wind naturally on the floor. Although heavy, being surrounded by such a long tail instantly brought out the character's soul. Complemented by the dragon-horn hair accessories on my head and highlighted blue hair, it completely maxed out the traits of The Sui Siblings.
The Go game on the table and the scattered calligraphy scrolls were also important props this time. The state of black and white pieces resting on the board always brings to mind a peaceful match during a duel. When shooting the third close-up shot of playing Go, I deliberately slowed down my movements, imagining the character computing a certain match or pondering the stories of that massive clan. The ink calligraphy fabric beneath my feet and the oil-paper umbrella in the background filled the entire space with a scholarly atmosphere. This quiet, unpretentious Chinese ancient style perfectly fits the core of this character.
The white primary color palette of the costume this time also put the fabric to the test. The light, ethereal flow combined with the embellishment of a pearl necklace created an "ice-crackle jade glaze" texture under the reflection of light. The makeup leaned toward a refreshing style, emphasizing the expression of the eyes, hoping to leak a hint of cool aloofness into the frame. The photographer managed the rhythm exceptionally well, showing great professionalism in the timing of the shutter clicks and lighting adjustments. The emotion of the entire photoset is serene rather than depressing, telling the character's own story through light and shadow.
In the process of cosplay, one naturally captures those moments that belong to the character yet transcend them. This set of photos froze many surprising moments. In the future, I hope to continue trying more characters and scenes with a sense of storytelling, igniting new sparks in stylistic exploration.
