This photo set captures the JK Reimu look from Touhou LostWord. I originally chose this style because I was drawn to the combination of the Red headscarf and the sailor-style JK uniform—this parallel world concept is perfect for capturing everyday urban lifestyle photos. Regarding the costume, the Red headscarf is the key highlight, edged with lace ruffles; if tied improperly, it can easily slip off or lose its shape, so it took quite some time to adjust and secure. The sailor uniform features a black, white, and red color scheme with red stripes on the cuffs, using substantial fabric that gives it a crisp, structured silhouette. For makeup, I chose large-diameter colored contacts to make my eyes look rounder, complemented by fair foundation, with the eye makeup focusing on defining the aegyo-sal and outer corners to create a doll-like appearance. The wig is long and straight, and I smoothed it with a flat iron before the shoot to keep the ends neat, enhancing overall fidelity.
The first Outdoor photography shot was taken beside a water pool with glass curtain walls and fountains in the background. Because the reflections were intense, we specifically looked for an angle with side-transmitted light, giving the glass a crystal-clear look and cooling the color palette to contrast with the Red headscarf. The second photo was taken in a coffee shop against blue neon signs, capturing a modern urban vibe where I naturally posed sipping a drink. The indoor lighting leaned warm, and preserving those warmer tones created a more cozy, true-to-life everyday feeling.
This outfit is actually quite sensitive to angles. To capture that natural backward glance in the first photo, I turned my head multiple times until my neck felt a bit stiff. We also used fill light during the shoot; under harsh outdoor contrast with wide dynamic range, overexposure happens easily, so we compressed the highlights to preserve shadow details. Overall, this JK Reimu style suits this cool-toned urban daily aesthetic exceptionally well, with the Red headscarf serving as an eye-catching visual focal point. I intentionally avoided overt traditional elements this time, relying entirely on the collision between the modern JK uniform and the headscarf. I also brought a reflector to fill face lighting and create catchlights in my eyes, making the gaze more vivid. Post-processing was tailored to each setting: outdoor shots leaned cool to highlight the textures of glass, water, and crisp white uniforms, while indoor shots leaned warm to emphasize the relaxed ambiance of the cafe. The Red headscarf looked intriguingly out of place yet surprisingly harmonious within this modern backdrop. Perfecting the shape of the headscarf took considerable time, making this a deeply fulfilling cosplay endeavor.
Let's talk more about styling details. For the headscarf, I tried wearing it directly as well as pinning it first, and found that tying my hair up beforehand was essential; otherwise, it slipped around constantly. The lace edging also tended to curl, so hairspray was applied to hold its shape. The collar and sailor lapels are structured and needed ironing beforehand to remove creases, with the red chest striping adding a finishing touch. Regarding the shoot itself: the weather was lovely, though the sunlight was quite intense. The first shot was chosen near the water, utilizing architectural shadows and reflections for that urban feel. I posed in a three-quarter turn looking back, which showed off both the silhouette of the headscarf and the lines of the outfit. Holding a phone and bag matched the JK setting, adding a touch of narrative, like waiting for someone or checking messages after school. The second shot was in the cafe; despite the bustling environment, we found a quieter corner with a blue neon sign in the background, where I held my drink and looked into the lens, aiming for a cool, slightly mysterious gaze. Because the contacts were quite large, they gave my eyes a distinctive otherworldly aura. For post-processing, we adjusted skin texture to appear porcelain-smooth, fair, and translucent while enhancing color contrast—especially between red and blue—to make the subject pop. In recreating 2D character designs, makeup alone isn't enough; expressions during shooting are vital. I kept extraneous facial expressions to a minimum to better align with the character's temperament. This JK uniform is comfortable to wear casually, even if the headscarf makes it slightly dramatic. A few passersby looked on that day, but treated it as just a curious fashion choice. The wind was breezy by the water, and the headscarf almost blew away several times, requiring me to hold it down between shots. The whole process was tiring, but seeing the results made it worthwhile. This set represents one of my most satisfying states, and the combination of the Red headscarf and sailor uniform never gets old.
