For this Winter in the Port pop-up shoot, the costumes and props for my partner and me underwent several rounds of fittings and adjustments, and the final visual texture was truly gratifying. Portraying Kashino Cosplay, the headpiece with its massive branching bovine horns required extra attention to weight balance when transitioning between indoor and outdoor temperature shifts. However, paired with the layered white ruffled maid skirt and halter black bowtie design, the airy lightness of the overall outfit balanced out the weight of the headpiece. The silver wig combined with light red contact lenses under warm-toned lighting helped me capture that quiet, gentle feeling of the character amidst a snowy Winter in the Port.
Beside me, my partner portrayed Shimanto cosplay, dressed in a black-and-white maid uniform accented with red lines, wearing a small white headband with animal ear motifs and a silver metal bell pendant on her chest, beautifully echoing my look. Standing together beside the white column decorated with teal botanical motifs, the giant red archway and warm yellow chandeliers in the background crafted a cozy, tranquil atmosphere unique to the Port. We quickly immersed ourselves in character during shooting because of the outstanding fabric quality—from the fluffiness of the skirts to the length of the gloves, everything provided ample room for expressive body language. The moment I held up my skirt to face the camera, my black over-the-knee stockings presented an even matte texture under the indoor lighting, which, paired with black patent leather high heels in this Stocking outfit, preserved both the cuteness of the 2D anime design and the layered elegance of a winter outfit.
Looking back at this Winter in the Port pop-up project, from location selection to lighting and post-production color grading, we communicated thoroughly with the photography team to present a warm, gentle visual tone. Although winter location shoots inevitably face challenges due to cold temperatures—such as shorter camera battery life and wigs prone to static electricity—stepping into the staged set instantly overshadowed all inconveniences with the immersive feeling of stepping into the world of Azur Lane. Particularly when holding the white star props or guiding each other's poses under warm-toned striped lighting, I genuinely felt the daily lifestyle moments of the characters living in the port. This deep immersion is what I treasure most every time I dedicate myself to cosplay.
To me, cosplay is far more than simply putting on character costumes and snapping a few photos; it is about integrating one's understanding of the character's personality while being as faithful to the source material as possible. This time, whether it was the cut of the skirts or tiny elements prone to mishaps like bowties and detached sleeves, I made thorough preparations. During the hair and makeup session before the official shoot, we spent over two hours unifying the overall makeup texture, especially the eyeliner wing, striving to match the delicate facial styling characteristic of Azur Lane. When playing Shimanto cosplay, my partner maintained a natural, everyday standing posture, and as we alternated between solo portraits and duo interactions, we consistently ensured our outfit color schemes harmonized without cluttering the frame.
Winter in the Port might not have been accompanied by heavy snowfall, but the warm tones we created on set and these maid dresses sewn stitch by stitch forged a special winter memory. Every click of the shutter seemed to freeze these carefully prepared elements into tangible form. For this pop-up shoot, what remains most memorable isn't just the aesthetic compositions and elongated leg lines in the Stocking outfit, but also our collaborative process of constantly adjusting prop placements. It reminded me that outstanding cosplay works are always co-created by a team.
Seeing the final photos, all those moments of shivering in the cold wind waiting for the shutter or retaking shots due to imperfect lighting angles became treasured details. Through this photo set, I hope fellow fans can feel that sense of warm belonging from a Winter in the Port. For me, that is where the true charm of Azur Lane cosplay lies.
