Bringing this "Kamuro Giku" look from initial concept to completion took considerable thought and effort. To capture Kotone Fujita's specific visual identity in Gakuen Idolmaster, I compared numerous tailoring options during pre-production. Upon receiving the costume, the red sleeveless coat had a subtle luster that gave it exceptional texture under sunlight. Layered over a black turtleneck base, the red-and-black geometric color-blocking across the chest serves as the outfit's visual centerpiece. The cuffs are particularly distinctive, featuring traditional red-and-white checkerboard (ichimatsu) patterns overlaid with white cherry blossom motifs that deliver a striking visual impact. To enhance layering, the obi sash was crafted from fabric with vibrant floral prints, accented by green cord knots and golden bells. The train behind features a purple-to-green gradient in lightweight fabric, fluttering gracefully in the breeze or while moving.
Styling the wig was another massive project. The golden twin braids needed to stay voluminous, while the bangs had to be trimmed flush along the face. The red headband and side white fox mask were essential signature pieces; painting the red eye markings on the mask took quite some time, and multiple hidden bobby pins secured it firmly to the wig. For makeup, I opted for warm reddish eyeshadow to harmonize with the garment's palette, paired with amber contact lenses to give the eyes a focused gaze. To embody this look's poised coolness combined with youthful vitality, the base was kept clean and luminous, focusing attention on blending at the outer corners.
The shoot took place in a Japanese garden, where wooden architecture, shoji sliding doors, red maple leaves, and lanterns created an exquisite atmosphere. To complement the environmental tones, I communicated with the photographer regarding lighting angles, using dappled daylight filtering through foliage to add depth. The red umbrella played an instrumental role as a prop: standing with it required controlling arm muscle lines to look natural yet tense; sitting on the wooden veranda with the umbrella beside me and crossed legs, the platform red booties paired with calf socks elongated leg proportions, while the black socks and booties sharpened the leg silhouette as part of this Stockings cosplay aesthetic.
To match the autumnal theme of "Kamuro Giku," I incorporated contained yet powerful gestures, such as reaching up to touch maple leaves or glancing back over my shoulder. Every pose involved micro-adjustments to shoulder tilt and waist rotation to showcase the garment's tailoring from every angle. It was quite exhausting to repeatedly adjust postures across wooden decks and stairs in platform booties, sometimes holding a pose for long stretches waiting for optimal lighting. Yet through fine-tuning facial expressions to channel the character in this persona, the final frames felt immensely rewarding. It was an exceptionally satisfying attempt at costume accuracy and environmental harmony.
