Today at the signing event of the Baoguang Anime and Game Carnival in Foshan, I am cosplaying Kuromi Serika from Blue Archive. This outfit looks casual, but the handling and control of the details took a lot of energy. The black sleeveless zippered cropped top required quite a bit of ironing and adjustment beforehand to ensure it doesn't easily deform during signing and walking. Both the depth of the neckline and the waist-cinching cut need to fit the body shape closely, otherwise it easily looks bulky on stage or when sitting down to sign. The black leather belt metal-ring choker around the neck, as well as the wide white belt with silver metal grommets around the waist, are all meant to capture the character's slightly rebellious yet neat style.
The head styling is the top priority of this preparation. Straight black hair with neat bangs, topped with black-and-white cat ears. To keep the cat ears in a three-dimensional shape, I used quite a few styling structures inside the wig. The black bow on the side of the hair was also chosen after repeated comparisons with the character design sheet to ensure the proper proportion. To give the overall makeup and styling more of a 2D texture, I specially chose purple contact lenses, and the eye makeup blending is slightly deeper, trying to restore Serika's slightly tsundere yet very reliable temperament. Holding a microphone in hand was actually considered for the interactive scenario during the signing event, feeling that this fits the character's atmosphere better and makes it easier to interact with friends coming to the site.
The signing event lasted from morning to afternoon, and many fellow fans came to the site. Everyone brought merchandise over, some chatting about the game's plot, and others praising the makeup and styling accuracy. The atmosphere of this kind of offline anime convention is really great, allowing you to directly hear everyone's love for the character. Every time I do cosplay, from final makeup and test fits to the venue, although tiring, communicating with everyone is very happy. Although the weather in Foshan was a bit hot, the atmosphere inside the venue remained high, and everyone was very enthusiastic. To maintain the character's state, touch-ups and wig grooming had to be done in spare moments.
As a coser, every time I go to an anime convention for a signing, what I care about most is whether I can present the best side of the character to the friends coming to meet me. There is a sense of contrast in Serika; she might like to complain on the surface, but actually cares deeply about everyone, which is also the expression and posture I focused on pondering when doing this cosplay. Sometimes a glance or the posture of holding the microphone needs to be rehearsed in my mind several times, and when communicating with the photographer, I try my best to capture vivid and natural moments. For example, tilting the head slightly to look at the lens, or looking like holding the microphone ready to speak, are all attempts to capture the vivid side of the character.
Today at the site, I also met some friends who also do cosplay, and we exchanged insights on character portrayal and costume/prop making. In an environment like an anime convention, the lighting is relatively complex, so there are also requirements for the durability and reflection control of facial makeup; translucent powder and setting spray are essential. Today's signing styling of Kuromi Serika adds some details suitable for on-site interaction based on the original costume, such as the way of holding the microphone and the combination with small props.
Thank you to the friends who came to find me and play today, and thanks everyone for the freebies and photo returns. I will continue to stay here for a while, and everyone is welcome to come over and communicate anytime, whether chatting about Blue Archive's plot or daily life.
Today's Kuromi Serika signing styling overall presents a dark yet slightly playful style, paired with the exhibition board background at the site, which has a great atmosphere. I hope everyone has a great time at the anime convention and finds like-minded friends they love.
