When shooting this Yabuki Shuro cosplay, I was actually conceiving a small scene with a bit of contrast in my mind. Shuro is a character who looks ordinary normally, but she actually hides a lot of careful thoughts, and that feeling of being a bit airheaded yet a bit mischievous really strikes a chord with me. To restore her life-like yet slightly fantastical temperament, I deliberately took a minimalist approach to the costume, makeup, and props, using no heavy gear but choosing casual elements like band-aids and cloth strips to embellish the look.
The wig was trimmed several times to get those naturally falling yet dynamic bangs, just enough to slightly cover the eyes, which, combined with the pink eye makeup, could express that innocent yet dark-minded gaze. What I want to share the most this time is the lighting experiment during this Japanese-style photography session in the washitsu room. The first two photos used mixed blue and purple light sources to simulate the evening atmosphere filtering through the shoji doors, making the whole scene look quiet and dreamy, while the last photo used a stronger magenta side-backlight to create a more dramatic sense of oppression.
But speaking of the most interesting part of this shoot, it has to be the prank element of the panda headpiece. To fit the phrase described in the post, "Does Sensei like Shuro's pranks?", I added two plush panda headpieces, deliberately making them look like Shuro's exclusive little sidekicks—placing one at the feet and another popping up next to me, just like a harmless prank easter egg. For props, I also prepared that long sword with cyan patterns. Although it's just a prop sword for photos, holding it and striking defensive or intercepting poses really lets me immerse into the roleplay instantly.
The shooting day was extremely exhausting because I had to maintain various poses on the tatami mats and repeatedly adjust them, but seeing the relaxed yet exquisite atmosphere in the final photos makes everything feel worth it. The Shuro I want to convey is the kind of unique character charm where you can't help but want to protect her, yet you are always left amused and exasperated by her antics. I hope you can see the little thoughts I put into the details, such as the position of the band-aid on her face, the folds of the slightly rolled-up sleeves, and that faintly teasing gaze for this piece of Anime cosplay.
