The Convention photo from the Smash! 2026 Sydney Comic Convention in Australia has finally arrived! The venue here features an expansive open-air terrace and rooftop garden, perfectly suited for environmental portrait photography. This time, I went with an original casual design for Asuka Cosplay from Neon Genesis Evangelion—rather than her classic red plugsuit, I chose this white spaghetti-strap dress. To maintain instant character recognition, the wig and signature red hairclips were carefully coordinated. Sydney's sunlight was exceptionally intense that day, so we chose the late afternoon when the sun angled lower. Because of the heavy backlight and side rim lighting, the contrast ratio was quite pronounced. To preserve that authentic, sun-drenched texture, I decided to shoot straight out of camera without complicated color grading.
On the gear side, I used a Nikon ZR paired with the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S. The 35mm focal length is incredibly practical for convention photos; it captures enough of the architectural and botanical background so the images don't feel studio-bound, conveying Australia's unique sense of open space. To balance facial shadows under backlighting, we placed a ZHIYUN MOLUS X100 in front as a fill light. This light has more than enough output for daytime outdoor use, and its compact form factor made one-handed mobility through the convention hall effortless.
During shooting, the model settled into character swiftly. Whether leaning against the concrete wall gazing into the distance or casually twirling plucked blades of grass, her movements felt completely organic. Most of the frames were medium/bust shots, avoiding exaggerated poses to capture that breezy, relaxed ambiance on the convention rooftop terrace. The contrast between the crisp white dress and lush green foliage felt wonderfully refreshing, with sunlight tracing gorgeous rim lighting along her light-toned locks.
Looking back across the session, pairing a 35mm prime with a portable fill light proved to be an immensely functional combo for the complex lighting and bustling crowds of an anime convention. In wardrobe management, white dresses can easily blow out highlights in harsh sun, so we made subtle exposure compensation adjustments on set. The camera's dynamic range was a huge asset here—retaining rich highlight details without crushing shadows, delivering pleasing, straight-out-of-camera tones.
Attendance on the day was quite packed, so finding this secluded pocket on the rooftop was quite fortunate. The foliage and muted grey concrete walls formed natural backdrops, keeping crowds out of frame to ensure pristine, clean compositions. Since these are straight-out-of-camera shots, post-processing was essentially limited to slight cropping, preserving raw skin textures and subtle chiaroscuro details—a genuine tribute to the convention atmosphere under the Australian sun where 2D steps into reality. After wrapping up this set, I reflected on how to elevate the quality of a Convention photo using ambient lighting and minimalist scenes without elaborate props. Convention photography doesn't always have to happen inside flash-lit studio boxes; embracing the local environment and harnessing natural light can yield remarkable results.
