For this outdoor shoot of Marisa Kirisame, I chose this expansive area carpeted in Kochia. These fluffy, spherical plants transition in hue from emerald green to yellowish-green, offering rich visual layers, and their height—growing slightly taller than a person—formed natural corridors that were ideal for outdoor compositions. The moment I saw this location, I felt it aligned impeccably with the character's Magician setting; an environment brimming with organic nature and a hint of mysticism elevates the character effortlessly.
Regarding the costume, this ensemble features a design splicing black-and-white gingham with intricate lace trims. The top consists of a black corset paired with white puff sleeves, with detailed lace edging along the collar and cuffs that required careful straightening to look crisp and defined. The skirt is a tiered, high-low ruffled silhouette that swished with graceful volume during movement, while revealing leg lines faithful to the character's canonical design. A brown leather belt was cinched around the waist, hung with several small pouches; to honor every detail, these small accessories were crafted with fine precision, and though they added a bit of weight, keeping them was essential for the overarching aesthetic. The headwear is a wide-brimmed soft witch hat lined with white ruffled pleats, requiring precise tilt adjustments to avoid obstructing my eyes while conveniently shading the face from harsh sunlight.
In terms of props, the broom served as the primary visual anchor: a curved black handle bound with monochrome ribbons and dangling a cylindrical charm near the base. The organic texture of the broom bristles contrasted against the soft Kochia foliage, striking a balanced harmony within the frame. My grip on the broom was adjusted across multiple takes to look natural while conveying the airy, spirited lightness of a magician.
The sunlight was quite intense on the shoot day. Harsh overhead lighting easily casts unflattering facial shadows, so we sought out pockets of soft, diffused light along the edges of the grassy canopy, utilizing the shadow of the hat brim to shield direct rays while employing reflectors to fill the face. The colors of the Kochia are heavily influenced by ambient light—appearing golden-yellow under direct sun and deep emerald in the shade—giving the background dynamic chromatic richness. In composition, the Kochia flanking both sides acted as leading lines, centering the subject to enhance spatial depth. We explored diverse angles: top-down vantage points nestled the figure into the rolling sea of green, whereas low angles highlighted the dialogue between the subject and the sky. The pose of holding the hat brim with my right hand not only stabilized the hat, but also sculpted an aesthetic triangular silhouette with my arm.
For hair and makeup, the blonde wig needed airy, voluminous styling without letting the bangs obscure the eyes, while the eye makeup focused on capturing a lively, spirited gaze. Outdoor shoots truly test your endurance—from hauling props and changing wardrobe to nailing poses, managing everything independently is demanding. Yet seeing the final frames on the camera monitor made all the exertion completely worthwhile. I'm genuinely delighted with these shots and am heading back to organize the photos.
